T-shirt
Local tv news tonight (wnem) had a story I just watched on some website associated with wmu selling t-shirts depicting an Indian behind jail cell bars with the caption "caught a Chippewa", and on the back says " go broncos". CMU is outraged, and saying anyone wearing the shirt will be removed from game.

Definitely politically incorrect, and probably inappropriate. They are getting a lot of anti wmu mileage out of it.

RE: T-shirt
Would have been better putting pick of Rawls behind bars, saying felony u, or something like that.

Shirt stirring controversy ahead of big game

MT. PLEASANT, MI (WNEM) -
Football isn't the only thing people are talking about heading into the big Central-Western weekend.

Shirts that depict a Native American behind bars and say “Caught a Chippewa bout a week ago” are being created in Kalamazoo ahead of the rivalry match-up. On the back are the words “Hot Bronco” with a picture of Western University's mascot.

WNEM TV5 talked to Central Michigan University Assistant Director of Public Relations Heather Smith about the shirts. Smith said the university is aware of them, and call them culturally insensitive.

"Showing a Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe member, or any member of that community in a negative way, is not right, and it doesn't show who we are, it doesn't show who they are and it's just very racist and culturally insensitive, and we're just really outraged by it."

Smith also said they will not allow anyone wearing the shirt into the stadium for Saturday's game.

The university has also reached out to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. The tribe is aware of the shirt, but said it will not allow the shirts to impede on the great relationship.

WWMT spoke to the Western student who created the shirts. He said it was all in good fun and he never meant to offend anyone.

Other students WWMT spoke to said they found the shirt racially insensitive.

The Twitter account that was selling the shirts has been shut down.

Not sure that the student that created them does, either.

That said, kids do dumb stuff. Most of the time, it doesn't come back to bite them in the azz. Sometimes it does. In a few cases, the dumbness is so severe that the consequence is fatal and the kid becomes a Darwin Award nominee. In those cases, the event is often preceded by "Hey! Watch this!"

RE: T-shirt
Every year a few entrepreneurial students make t shirts up for this game and get a threatening letter from the school licensing divisions. Of course, by then they've sold a chit load of them and they don't give a chit.

If they don't want to be called Chippewas then dump the damn name and call themselves The Flying C's 01-ncaabbs

Maybe they should
have tried this one

That Rawls was caught stealing a purse (the Chippewa)... but also meshed with the concept of us "catching" him (containing him on his runs)...?

It would have been funnier if they had an Indian from India on there with a feather in his hair.

RE: T-shirt
Personally a couple of fatheads of the Rawls carrying the purse photoshop would have been much better.

Perhaps a few students could get over to FedEx Kinkos and use that giant copy machine to print a few off. Send the bill to....

RE: T-shirt
Yeah this is pretty bad. Personally, I'm one that thinks political correctness has gone overboard with schools like EMU and Miami etc being pushed into changing their mascot. And the Washinton Redskins being threatened with law suits if they don't change their name. In my opinion CMU having the Chippewas as a nickname is in no way insensitive.

But, THIS is completely insensitive. And honestly I am embarrassed that one of our students wouldn't realize that when putting this together.

I've seen plenty of F*CK CENTRAL or F*CK WESTERN shirts over the years and honestly that is in good fun. This is just being stupid.

No, Todd - that would have been insensitive to feathers, or something.

I joke, but I do agree with WW42.

Stupid.

Why did this even make the news? It's just some dumb kid that made a stupid (and offensive) t-shirt. Can't believe it's even getting air time.

The Chimp Admins have been trying to make their campus PC for years. But that's like asking the Michigan Militia to add more women to their organization.

Big news day in the Northern Lower. The next story was about Jim around the corner getting a 12 point from the drivers seat of his F250

^^^^You've obviously never watched a WNEM newscast. Lamest newscast in the U.S. Think of the old TV show WKRP only with television and without Loni Anderson (Jennifer). Les Nessman was a perfect caricature of their sports guy when I was growing up. Dude did not know who Carl Yazstremski was and couldn't pronounce his name correctly. Was hilarious and sad at the same time.
