Cleveland St adding men's lacrosse
http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf...wil_5.html

It looks like a Horizon type lacrosse league is closer to forming now. Cleveland St, Detroit, Bellarmine, Air Force. Just need two more.

If the PAC12 is interested in adding ice hockey, that probably precludes men's lacrosse, although USC said years ago that there were interested in starting a team.

Most of the growth in men's lax has been with southern private schools, where they can parlay lax into enrollment growth.

Wow. I'm surprised. Didn't know it was that big in Cleveland.

Now I'm wondering when UC will add men's lacrosse. We already have women's lacrosse, and a great stadium that's less than 5 years old. We also have one of the best club lacrosse teams. If it's that popular then we need to start funding it; it might even fund itself eventually.

Lacrosse has grown by leaps and bounds in Ohio this past decade. Most of the large suburban and private schools in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus have a varsity and rec league teams now. It is poised to grow even more as there are a lot more of younger kids getting into leagues.

I have to think the demand will force UC to get a varsity men's team sooner than later.

But is there any particular reason to believe that the PAC12 is interested in adding ice hockey? That sounds like speculation loosely based on the Arizona State decision ... without realizing that the Arizona State decision is based in part on not having a lot of in-region competition for players.

Also, Cleveland is only 3 hrs or so from some very good HS Lax in WNY. I'm surprised another ACC team hasn't stepped up to add a team.

Cleveland State to the SoCon would be most likely, but I could see America East picking them up as their 8th member or the CAA picking them up as their 7th member.

There really needs to be three more Midwest/Mid-South programs to justify a new conference. Of course it would have to be a school outside the ACC, Big East, or Big Ten, as they would have a conference available to them immediately.

Hockey gets more viewers than lacrosse. The PAC12 has endorsed Arizona State's hockey aspirations. Reports from hockey sources say that UCLA, USC, Stanford, Oregon St, and Arizona have an interest in starting hockey. Only USC has formally stated an interest in lacrosse, but that was a few years ago. The PAC12 probably wants both, but hockey would probably have higher ratings and can actually be profitable for schools.

Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, and Nebraska have all been rumored for a couple years. Nebraska's Haymarket arena can make ice. The other schools don't have a DI rink on campus. Personally think Maryland could get funds from Under Armour to get ice in their old BB fieldhouse. Under Armor wants in the hockey apparel and uniform market and the Terrapins could be their models sort of speak.

Iowa State has been rumored to decades, but no Big 12 team plays hockey.

Wonder if the Horizon League wants to sponsor lacrosse. Detroit and Cleveland St would seem to want that. Some of the schools seem like natural hockey schools, with rinks on campus or nearby. Wright St, Oakland, Milwaukee, and Ill-Chicago (which dropped hockey some years ago) are all hockey possibilities it would seem. Valpo and UWGB (which has stated it has no interest) might be lacrosse first. Youngstown St is the only team with football, so Title IX makes any male sport more difficult.

I'm surprised a thread on lacrosse has garnered so many responses.

The Southern would be a good fit with so many young programs but they just took in AFA which I think brings them to 8. I think they would want to establish their schools and conference (for lacrosse) more before bringing on any others.

The AE also has a new program starting this year and I would doubt they would want to take them in. I can't see a new program remotely competing in the CAA nor the CAA wanting to shelter them.

The lone independent (NJIT) would be closer and have a head start (this spring) on Cleveland State if either were really looking to expand.

Lacrosse is a revenue sport at some schools. The NCAA Lacrosse finals typically sells 30,000-45,000 tickets, and it actually drew a higher attendance than the NCAA men's basketball final in 2006 and 2008.
