Ed Mathey resigns?
http://northernstar.info/sports/niu-base...f81b5.html

I don't understand this at all or the timing. Why didn't he resign after last season ended? Or did they make a plan after last season to keep him on until the next recruiting class was signed?

Did he resign himself or was he force-resigned because the program has stagnated and regressed? It says he's going back to North Central College so its not because he's done with baseball and coaching.

RE: Ed Mathey resigns?
Signing day for baseball was this past week...wasn't it?...edit yes it was on the 18th.

Maybe it was to keep the class intact??? Seems really odd but I am fine with it since the program seems to have not really done anything...but that could be due more to playing facilities in poor condition in the spring and scheduling than coaching.

"With a record of 294-371-2, Mathey is the program’s all-time leader in wins and has the four highest single-season win totals in program history"

yikes! thats not even above .500. (and how do you tie in baseball?)

The blurb and the context of going back to North Central make it feel like more of a personal lifestyle choice for him.

I just met him, actually. We tailgated and went to the Toledo game together. Really nice guy. My friend played for him at NIU some time back. It's nice to see a coach respect the hell out of his former players like that.

RE: Ed Mathey resigns?
My guess is that Mathey knew he was on a short leash with Frazier and decided to take the North Central job while it was open instead of possibly getting canned later with no job lined up. I have met Mathey and he's a super nice guy and I wish him well.

As I have noted many times before NIU baseball really has to rethink it's scheduling philosophy. For several years now they've played a brutal non-conference schedule that has resulted in them starting each season 0 and 12 or so. With that simple change and the arrival of a new, state of the art turfed field in the next few years there's no reason NIU baseball can't be as good as NIU football. Their facilities, including Yordon and Chessick, will be second to none and they will no longer have to play home games at UIC, Chicago State and Wheaton College to get them in during bad spring weather.

The baseball team MUST have field turf....Softball team too!

Way too many home games are moved to some other field at the last min and that cannot be good for the team.

Wasnt he the lowest paid head coach in the MAC for baseball not too long ago?? wouldnt surprise me if he got a raise to go back to North Central. Pretty sure he played there and coached there for like 10 years

Kind of a slap in the face to the six guys who just signed national letters of intent to play for Mathey at NIU.

When I talked to Mathey, he said that this is the plan.

Or this, if you like to read...

"Mathey said a big reason for him leaving DeKalb to take the North Central job was due to his family. Mathey has three children, one who’s currently in college while the others will be during the next few years. While he’s at North Central they will all have their college tuition taken care of by the school."

Need lights, too. We couldn't ever host the conference championship tournament without them.

I'm not a Mathey fan. I've got too many first-hand stories about BS promises he made in recruiting which led to local kids heading to places like Miami of Ohio instead of here. I'll just leave it there.

Interesting. Is tuition for dependents not covered for NIU employees?

Also, as a coach at a division 3 school, he would not be considered a full time employee. I'm sure his benefits are nothing in comparison to NIU.
