You can't put in a chainlink fence.. You'd have to construct a concrete wall liken to what is done for a prison, which means you'd have to have rebar matting tied with gaps at 2" at the least, probably concrete with a mix design of 5000 psi, and probably take into account a thickness that would with stand a blast. Even then you'd still need people to constantly patrol the area. With favorable weather conditions and the right contractor you could build this wall in a year. I don't see putting the cost on the states that border Mexico since it's not the state's decision to grant amnesty either.

IMO, look at all the troops we have stationed all over the globe. Nobody can convince me that protecting our own southern border is less important than troops stationed everywhere from Okinawa to Germany to South Korea - and on and on and on.

Hell, we probably have enough active troops bivouacked around the world that, if we stationed them on the southern border, they could damn near stand shoulder to shoulder.

What is a standing military for if not to protect the country. I consider the infiltration of millions of non-Americans illegally across our border to take up residence and avail them of our tax dollars as a threat to the country.

Consider it guard duty.

Maybe when they figure out they can't make it across our border - they quit trying and the need for so many troops is lessened.

What you are talking about is the militarization of the border. At this point that is the ONLY way it can be secured. The situation is beyond the capability of the Border Patrol. The question is whether any POTUS has the wherewithal to go to Congress and ask for permission to deploy troops the the Southern US. As you said, if we can defend the 38th parallel from North Korea, patrolling the Rio Grande is a snap.

Of course it is, but what is the purpose of the military if not to protect the country from things/those that will do harm to the United States?

As you stated, if we can go 2 thousand miles away and protect a border, how can we not protect our own?

Mind boggling actually. Hell, the southwest is full of military bases since the days of westward expansion - just move them to adjacent the border. Look at the shovel ready jobs!!

If you had safe, easy, and secure worker permits people wouldn't have to sneak across. Give the decent people a legal way to move back and forth. They will use it. And they will vote for the party that gives that to them.

Once you do that, then you can shoot everyone else crossing. They will all be smugglers.

As I've also stated, our system to allow people to come here (another govt. agency under executive authority) is such a clusterfck, that's the REAL reason the honest folks sneak in. Why is it not surprising Obumble didn't address this in his speech as being a major contributor to the problem? He might actually have to do something.
