We certainly did not embarrass ourselves this season but as we aim for the top of the league we will have to get much, much better.

Just win today. That's all I ask.

ODU belongs in FBS and I'm loving some CUSA football! Still, bowl eligible!

Well, it has been a fun year I'll say that! A lot of people didn't think we'd win more than 3 games, so in that regard I think we can call this year a success. Our last two games are going to be tough so not sure if we'll make it to 6-6. I think 5-6 is doable and that would be a great year for our first FBS season.

As far as how I see us now, our defense is as usual highly suspect. While the play of our defense is marginally better then last year, it is easy to see the points allowed and say our defense is horrible. However, compared to last year we are getting more turnovers and forcing a few three and outs. That is good as the defense is designed to bend not break in the hopes our offense can toss up large numbers (we'll score 55, lets see if you can is the basic game plan for our our team). The big improvement I've seen this year in our defense is that our Def Coordinator is moving us into better formations (a lot more of the 46 which I've been hoping to see) instead of the same vanilla formation ever game.

The offense has been failing to click this year to a large extent. It seems to be a combination of poor play and poor play calling. Each game the offense will produce 2-3 good quarters and at least one dud quarter. During that dud quarter the opponent seems to build a lead that can't be overtaken. Our run game is suspect. I admit I hate doing runs out of the shotgun which our coach seems to be in love with.

Going forward ODU has a chance to shine. We have one the youngest squads in FBS and on top of that, almost all our recruits have been redshirted. This years recruiting class was ranked second best in CUSA. The QB taking over next year is said to be a Heinicke 2.0 so we'll see if that is true. If it is I think we'll be looking good next year.

Also, as a side note, our QB, Heinicke, is projected to be the #7 rated QB in the draft this year for the NFL. 02-13-banana

I'm sure other ODU fans can give better thoughts, that is just mine.

I would caution you to be careful about "Heinicke 2.0." Heinicke is huge for your team, clearly, and guys like that are never as easily replaced as fans think. Rice went through this after Chase Clement left, and we had an Alabama transfer we were all high on. Saw it happen to UH after Keenum left. Look no further than UTSA this year post-Soza. Everyone always thinks it's going to be easier than it is to replace a guy like that.

That being said, I think ODU set a great example this year and I think they're set up for future successes down the road. I'm a believer.

Similar was Stan Hill at Marshall following Chad Pennington & Byron Leftwich. He was solid but he was totally different type of player and personality off the field.

RE: Old Dominion Football.... So how is your 1st full year of CUSA football?
Realistically, we had no business thinking we could ONE CUSA game. Much of our enthusiasm and sometimes arrogance is a result of what we did in our ever-so-short stay in FCS.
Although we are playing a full CUSA schedule this year, we are still in year two of our two year transition; so we are not completely even FBS yet.

So, to answer your question, the whole thing feels surreal to me.
It feels great, and not just because of the wins.
CUSA bent over backwards for us last year with regard to scheduling, and the posters here who could have trashed and patronized the "upstart" Monarchs; instead welcomed us and have been very supportive.

I couldn't be happier with CUSA! (well, as long as UAB keeps football)

Color me impressed. Of all the schools that I expected LA Tech to lose to this year, ODU wasn't on the list. But you guys completely shut us down in the 2nd half 2 weeks ago. At the risk of sounding self serving, ODU beat a very good football team that day. I was especially impressed with your coaches. Without a doubt, they out-coached us in the 2nd half.

Looking forward to HOPEFULLY getting some revenge next year....05-stirthepot
