Lettuce discuss the Tigers bball team ITT. I'd like to shift some of the discussion away from the PG/G debacle and focus on defense and feeding our 3 elite post players. Also lettuce touch on Pastner too.
Defense wins championships in conference play and in the tournament so make blks, stls, rbs, hustle plays more important than points. Defense is how KY crushed KS, along with talent of course. Our defense can get our inexperienced guards in an advantageous position on the break to create fast break points. Otherwise, just get the ball across mid-court and focus on a half court offense that works through the big men. All three (King, Nichols, Goodwin) will make a roster in the league for at least one season, so feed them. All three of those guys logged serious minutes last season - they should be eating the competition alive this year. If that isn't happening then something is wrong behind the scenes.
That brings us to Pastner. For all intense and porpoises Pastner is starting to slide onto the hot seat. Entering his 6th season and I can think of 2 (TWO) games that he has won where he should not have. That is the sign of a good coach - winning a game here and there where you have no business winning. That means you out-coached the other side. As Lou Holtz used to say about playing freshman - "If a dog is gonna bite, it'll bite as a puppy", and I haven't really seen Pastner bite yet. Last year he beat Louisville twice, and his first game he almost beat Kansas, but too often have we been blown out or lost by double digits. We literally have almost lost every game we have been equal to or slightly less/more than in talent. So my question on Pastner is what is he doing to improve his coaching skills? Is he hanging out with long time NBA vets who had to draw up plays 82 nights a year versus competition with equal talent? Positive press conferences and saying winning is hard will only go so far.
The AD of UofM should definitely have a list of 5 possible replacements (he should have that list in his drawer no matter what/who is the coach) and I hope Avery Johnson is on it. We have the talent in Memphis alone to keep us in the top 20, we just need a guy who can actually coach on the floor, represent our university well and win. If you add recruiting to that then we get what Cal brought us. I think Avery could knock it out of the park. Pearl would be nice but do we really want to stain ourselves? At some point we need to get away from the JUCO/Issue players. Peace be with ya'll.... yeaaaa bo!

Thanks for taking the time to make your first post. One that starts a thread.
What some people before starting a new thread is they look around at existing threads to see if any similar threads already exist. I ASSume you did that and could not find any threads that mentioned, that in the thread starter's opinion that our current coach is not doing so well.
And the insight that Avery Johnson knows coaching, AWESOME!
Again, thanks taking the time to enlighten the board.

Ignore them Mr Wiggles... attacking fellow Tiger fans is just how some of them get their rocks off... makes them feel manly I guess.

Avery Johnson could have had the job when it was offered to Josh but showed no interest in it. What would make him think differently now?
