John Gillon
Gillon played well for Colorado State in their first game rout of Montana State. He played 15 minutes and scored 11 points. Looks like he is in their top 8 players (7 players had more minutes than he did). I expect him to be a solid contributor at CSU, but if one was going to leave, I'm glad we kept Josh. We are the deepest we have ever been at the guard position, so he probably made a good decision to leave.

RE: John Gillon
He would have been among our best scorers and playmakers had he stayed. And he could have always redshirted if there was too much of a logjam at the guard position. I hope he is happy where he is, but I hated to lose him.

We win some, we lose some. I haven't given him a second thought until someone on here recently mentioned he was playing for Colorado State. I never saw him as a point guard and we upgraded there. He is a good shooter and should be an effective 2 guard wherever he plays.

RE: John Gillon
You're right in that he was a natural two guard. He was quick as a hiccup and could score both from outside and inside.
But he's not here, and I'm happy with what we've got, so we move on.

We really haven't lost any outstanding players to transfer since the Kestenbaum, Newell and Platt era's. McCurdy and Kidd took Ball State to a couple of Sweet 16's. Carlos Rogers played a number of years in the NBA. Duane Washington played in the NBA. David Redman won conference player of the year at Valparaiso. Gillon was a nice player, but I doubt he will accomplish what any of these transfers did.

Speaking of transfers, my KU graduate son indicates that Hunter Mickelson will be a marginal role player at Kansas. With a redshirt year, under Joe Kleine, he could have been a difference maker here or possibly at ASU. Unfortunately, he thought he was "too good" to play in the Sun Belt. He will get a degree from a good school and go to a couple of NCAA tournaments as a player. But, if getting PT was a reason for transferring, I'm not sure he'll get much of that at Kansas.

Yes, he could have redshirted, paid his own way for a year, they could have given his scholarship to another player, and he could have taken one for the team like Stetson did.

Gillon obviously had no reason to do that. He was not from Arkansas and got a full scholarship from a team in a much higher rated conference.

I doubt that Stetson would have done it either if he'd had the talent that Gillon had.
