RE: OT: Syracuse Trying To Set Indoor Hockey Attendance Record This Weekend
Trust me Ken most of us would like SU to add ice hockey. I know baseball is strong in the ACC but Cuse would have a chance to actually make money (or not lose that much) in ice hockey (would have potential to be Top 5 within a decade of startup). Baseball would be a money loser and not much chance to be that good...if a new domed stadium is built and it could accommodate early Spring Ball inside...Baseball might prove to be a tad more successful (wins + revenue).

Seems like you hear about them trying to set some sort of record all the time.

BTW, Looks like Duke @ Cuse will be another sellout of 35k+ fans..I'm sure they'll figure out a way to get 50 more fans in to break the record again. Cuse fans love their T-shirts with record attendance numbers written on it.

I don't think Syracuse should feel any need to add baseball. Ice hockey would be a different story - in fact, if 'Cuse, Pitt and UL all added hockey, would that be enough to sponsor the sport? (I'm assuming BC and ND play in the ACC for Ice Hockey).

If Cuse added Ice Hockey I'm pretty sure they would want to get into Hockey East eventually.

Hard to see Hockey East not scooping them up either. Although they'd need a partner and I think HE would have to go to 7 school divisions at that point.

As for the post you responded to, that would give the ACC 5 hockey playing schools. You need 6 for an autobid to the NCAAs, so I doubt the ACC would start sponsoring it as I don't see BC wanting to leave Hockey East anyway. Doubly so for a league without an autobid. If BU and the ACC could agree to have BU as a one sport affiliate it could work.

It's one of the biggest :headscratch: questions on this forum. The only real answer is Title IX. Syracuse already has womens hockey so they have absolutely no way to offset the influx of mens scholarships. still doesn't explain where the F*** all those extra scholarships (as a perk of having womens only hockey) went.

I heard we were supposedly out of compliance before we upgraded the women's team, and we are supposedly still slightly out of compliance with them.

Cheers,
Neil

When it comes to Title IX, "compliance" is a fluid term. What I do know is that Syracuse appears to be the only ACC school that offers more women's scholarships than men's. There is only one school in the league - Miami - which offers fewer men's scholarships than the Orange. Unless Syracuse has a truly extraordinary ratio of female to male students, I don't think Title IX is likely to be as much a problem as it is an excuse.

EDIT: I checked, and they don't. 55% female, 45% male isn't very unusual today.

The vast majority of schools technically aren't Title IX compliant. They're just close enough and calling one out would cause chaos.

that still begs the question. where the F*** are all those scholarships going? we don't have baseball or mens hockey for crying out loud. what sports are eating them all up?

UConn has both baseball and men's hockey. I don't see why Syracuse can't do the same. Maybe if Pitt and Syracuse added hockey, HE would expand to 14.

I thought an old friend of mine played baseball at Syracuse from 1981-1984. I guess my memory is wrong.

Cuse killed Varsity baseball back around 1973. He might have been on the club team. I doubt HE would take Cuse right away...probably have to play 4-5 years in a lower league and then move up if they show progression and have decent facilities. I think the new stadium/or refurb is next on the agenda...so unless a windfall came it isn't going to happen for at least a decade.

I don't think they are considering adding sports but I think NC State would be a good candidate for adding hockey. They share an arena with the NHL Hurricanes so there would be no investment in facilities required. There are a couple of local rinks they could use for practice. You could make the argument to Hurricanes ownership that investing in (i.e. donating to) local college hockey would boost the sports profile. On the other hand they might see college hockey as a competitor.

The ACC could determine its champion the way the Ivy League does. The 6 Ivy hockey teams play in the ECAC. They use their records against each other to determine the Ivy champion. It is possible you could win the Ivy League, ECAC, both or neither.

The ACC could be a great ice hockey league if it wanted to be.
I'd drive to Raleigh to catch a game (not games, just "a game")

RE: OT: Syracuse Trying To Set Indoor Hockey Attendance Record This Weekend
Did I read on this site that the ACC must sponsor a sport if four of the teams in the conference have the sport? And if the ACC sponsors a sport, the school's team must play in conference?

Hockey East is considered the "SEC of Hockey" up here in BC territory. 9 of the 12 schools are within 90 miles of each other (BC, BU, Northeastern, Providence, UMASS, UMASS Lowell, Merrimack, and UCONN, the other schools are Maine, Vermont, and Notre Dame).

As much as it would be a culture shock for the ACC to host hockey, It would be an even bigger one for BC to move their program to the ACC. But at least being the "Duke or UNC of Hockey" might finally get BC some respect in the ACC.
