ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – In his first collegiate game, UCF freshman B.J. Taylor led the Knights with 14 points and added nine rebounds in a 64-55 victory over Stetson Sunday. On Monday he was honored as the first American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week this season.

Taylor became the first true freshman to lead UCF in scoring since Marcus Jordan put up 18 against Houston as a freshman Feb. 16, 2010. Moreover, the Orlando native was the first freshman to do it in the season opener in 14 years. Joey Graham led the Knights with 13 points against Georgetown on Nov. 24, 2000.

After leading the Knights with 23 points and 22 points in their two exhibition games, Taylor’s 14 still led the way as UCF won its first game of the season for the 12th straight year. His 14 were the most for a true freshman in an opener since Isaac Sosa put up 18 in his first game back on Nov. 16, 2008.

Well I didn't see this coming.

Is there a light at the end of UCF's bball near death experience tunnel?

Why is this shocking? He was one of the best players in Florida. Parade All American. To me he had an off night. He is going to lead the team in scoring in a lot of games. We are really setup for a big year in 2015-16.

BJ Taylor is the first ever Parade All-American to ever sign with UCF.

While I'm sure he will take his lumps as a Freshman this year, the future is certainly bright, especially with all of the 5 new guys UCF will have next year...let alone, fellow Freshman Adonys Henriquez, who has already deserved to be in the starting line-up.

All 3 new players for UCF (Taylor, Henriquez and Shaheed Davis) were the top 3 scores in last night's game.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. A lot of competition in this conference, and we have a long hill to climb. I'd say expectations should be high for 2016-2017 when Taylor/Henriquez are Juniors (and would be a redshirt Junior year for Davis, senior year for McBride). Next year's class would have a year under their belt and hopefully a notable incoming class that year with someone that can make an immediate impact.

Probably an oncoming train. Time will tell.
