Thank You E-Mails & Texts to Alger, Bourne and Withers
I spent some time sending a few e-mails today to Alger, Bourne and Withers to thank them for making JMU Football successful in 2014. I also used the e-mails to Alger and Bourne to pitch a move to FBS and to let them know how good the purple chrome helmets looked on national TV. I thanked Withers for his leadership and the leadership of his staff in the 11 months they have been at JMU.

We don't hestiate to complain when things don't go well so we should also be quick to compliment when something is done really well. I encourage you to reach out with some positive words.

RE: Thank You E-Mails & Texts to Alger, Bourne and Withers
8-3 is great. But this is still not a well coached team. I believe we are getting better, but offensive talent has kept us afloat. I was encouraged by our second half defensive showing against Richmond, but that's about all the credit I can give to our coaches on defense this year. Also Withers has had about as many head scratching play calls this year as Matthews has in recent years. I believe credit should be given to Withers for good recruiting. But not good coaching. We'll see if that changes as more time goes on. Thanks to Bourne and Alger. Uh, no thanks.

We've pitched back to back second half shutouts...

I saw a well coached team yesterday in all 3 phases. A team that gets better and better is a well coached team, no Ifs ands or buts.

The Pugs scored two touchdowns in the second half. One was a blocked punt though.

Yeah, the purple paint looked real good as it came right off revealing the gold underneath. Just looks cheap..

And the decals are too big. Helmets looked like crap.

You guys are right. But you have to admit those other two games were not 4 good quarters. Good adjustments in the second half, but we still had to play from behind. But you're right, I will give credit for making adjustments.

But let's be real. Matthews was fired because he took 9-3 talent and performed at about 6-6. This is where we are supposed to be. And it's been a roller coaster and a bit of luck getting us there. I'm not sending thank you emails over that.

I don't think it was gold underneath, but didn't get the greatest look at it. Certainly didn't look like they painted over our old gold ones or anything, looked more yellowish or off white and flat. But the paint comes off of helmets sometimes, it happens and it happens at all levels. It happens in the NFL. How can you not love those helmets? The decals should be big, you don't want some small Duke Dog head that you can't see from far away.

I agree somewhat in that we haven't really played four quarters up to our potential except against Towson. Hopefully that improves, but the team definitely has improved throughout the year and I'd much rather be a team that starts slow then turns it on than a team that gets a lead then blows it.

I'm pretty happy, it's just one season but it's the first season with all new coaching and everything and we've gotten better and better as the year goes on and will hopefully be even better all year next year. Delaware and maybe even Villanova should consider themselves lucky they didn't have to play us when Richmond and W&M did. If we were playing all year the way we are now we'd be 10-2, 10-1 FCS.

I'm a believer in helmets don't do well with elaborate designs. Would rather have purple with a "JMU" or something simple. The opposite of the gold helmets.

They are not painted over helmets. They are new. The yellow underneath the chrome is like a primer.

No one is going to sign with a school based on their helmets..

No, it is an intangible that helps when recruiting kids. It helps to tip the scales a bit. If you think it doesn't help at all, then you're foolish. I would think most recruits make their decisions based on the whole package that a school offers.

And please don't trot out the tired "I don't want a recruit who care about uniforms" argument.

Yeah I am too. And you're right, when we started this season, few people saw 9-3 as a real possibility. Now most of see it as a safe bet. We definitely have gotten better. And like I said, I hope it continues on this course this year with the playoffs and keeps going next year. Just seems like the talent is unbelievable on this team. And we have the ability for a deep run.
