I think that is a requirement...which I wonder...
Would that be used against the AAC...since we possibly won't have "a" champion?
Yes. The G5 spot has to go to a champion.
Yes. It is a requirement. That's why BYU isn't eligible for it.
No. It will not be used against a potential AAC co-champ. IF 2 or more teams tie, each co-champ is "available" to be the AAC rep considered for the G5 slot.
In fact, the reason we have no tie-breaker this year is exactly for that reason. The AAC was concerned that, w/o a CCG winner, we might set up a tiebreaker that would cause the lower-ranked team to be presented to the CFP for consideration. With co-champs, the CFP will consider the one they have ranked higher. In a co-champ scenario with UCF and/or UC, it would likely be us, although UC has 3 votes in a poll where we have none.
But UC has 2 tough games left with Houston and Temple. UCF ends their season at ECU, and has to play rival USF right before that. It's quite possible that both could have another loss, so if we win the last 2, we would be outright champs.
Beyond that, we have 3 losses. Marshall is undefeated. CSU has 1 loss, and Boise has two. Marshall would have to lose a game, and both Boise and CSU would have to lose, to give us a realistic shot at the G5 slot. And Air Force (8-2) could still win the MWC, too.
So, in summary, we need:
1. Memphis to beat USF and UConn, and be ranked higher than any AAC co-champs, AND
2. Utah State to beat Boise State and San Jose State, and lose the MWC CCG, OR be ranked lower than Memphis, AND
3. Air Force to beat Colorado State, then lose another game, or be ranked lower than Memphis, AND
4. Marshall to lose to UAB, WKU or La Tech, AND have the committee rank them below Memphis, OR have Marshall lose 2 games, AND
5. Likely MAC champ Northern Illinois (8-2) to lose another game, or just not be ranked above us.
Simple, huh?
This is why I said yesterday that it would take almost a perfect storm of losses to put us in serious running for the G5 access spot in the Peach Bowl.
Too bad we couldn't pull out that Houston game. If so, we would be sitting here with a legit shot at playing somebody really good in the Peach Bowl.
Holy crap.
