...wore my UAB sweatshirt today...
...and had three different folks say 'go Blazers!' or positive words to that effect... including one guy decked out in Bama stuff... I was a bit taken back, not sure why, but just said thanks - we're trying to hang in there... so, looks like the 'general public' is on our side, at least in this small sample of respondents...
just wondering if anyone else has had more response than usual to UAB gear?

not every supporter of "Updyke U" is a brainwashed, programmed asshat...I wear something with UAB logo on it to work every day and of course, my car is decorated with UAB bumper stickers and one of those flags people fly on the side of their cars. Lately, I've gotten some empathy from a few who know that I root for the Blazers, and some of them don't like what's going down at all. But that's about it as far as their involvement goes. They're not the proactive kinds.

I will say that since this football season started, I've seen more folks wearing UAB shirts than in previous years.

Coach Clark, IMO, may have a lot to do with that...
may be too little...too late now...we'll see.

I really think most sports fans around the state are basically "Live and let live" in regard to UAB sports. They don't pull for UAB sports, but have little animosity towards them either. If the leadership cabal of the system BOT was not against them, Alabama would be a more normal place, but it is what it is.

Living in Florida I wore my T -shirt to work today surrounded by people who actually wore their gator gear (guess happy about Muschamp getting canned) Usually someone sees my shirt they mention the medical school.

RE: ...wore my UAB sweatshirt today...
This may come off sounding a little crazy; there are Auburn and Alabama fans that will support us if we give them a good reason. That reason is winning football and basketball games.
They will go to UAB football games when they do not conflict with AU and UA games and they think we will win. Once basketball is winning well and often (more than 20 games a season, never loosing at home and getting to the NCAA tournament every year), they will come out for that. In basketball, we already have a leg up on them, since both schools have not field good basketball squads in years.
Put fun, fast-paced, exciting football and basketball out there and tell them ''Hey your school isn't around this week - come see us. It's fun and you will have a great time." Also, we can get them to come out if we plan strategically.
The UAB athletics department has not been good about planning home games and times; when UA and AU are home, the best thing for us are away games and byes. When they are on the road, we should make sure that we are the only "game in town", so to speak.
Schedule home games times so that they do not start at the same time. In other words, don't force them to choose between us and the school they love - we will always lose that choice. UAB can get good support from these fans if UAB figures out how to work around their interest and don't force a choice on them.

I ran the Botanical Gardens Dirt Dash 5K this past Saturday in my UAB Football t-shirt, and most of the volunteers I passed gave me a "Go Blazers." I got a "That's right, UAB Football!" out of one guy.

I wore my class ring for the first time in years today. I was amazed it fit. Got several comments asking about it from co-workers and my prayer group. I was amazed how a few responded with "Go Blazers!" I was at a city office and commented on a lady's UAB desk clock and she responded.....that's right "Go Blazers!" Nice to see a little love for my Green and Gold in the Rocket City!

I've gotten "Go Blazers" here in the ATL too. There is a positive vibe which our football team is generating, which is all positive for the overall marketing of UAB.
Or Ty just has a very large family...
I'm not ruling out the latter, but will say it's definitely the former.

When Bryan Ellis was an upcoming senior I met his cousin in Georgia while traveling back from a trip to Orlando.

A complication of this desire - to avoid AU and UA home games - is that these two schools annually have 7 or 8 home games due to having G5 (or less) schools lining up to be well paid lambs three or four games each per year. This week we are playing an undefeated Marshall team while AU has Samford and UA has the team Samford recently soundly beat, Western Carolina - both probably on PPV basis. It would be VERY unlikely that UAB could schedule its five or six home games around the 14 to 16 home games of these two.
