Julian Dubose suspended 3 games for violation of team rules? Whatever- probably made a dumb decision somewhere but I don't want to kick him when he's down. He was one of the few who stuck around after the first big group of defections under Braun. I wish him the best really in the long run.

Maybe he was upset that they criticized him for showing up in class. Some habits are hard to break.

Not throwing anyone under the bus. It's curious that Rice had one of the worst roster defections of any college basketball team probably in history and nothing was revealed outside of allegations of racism by the AD. Obviously some kids used Rice as a stepping stone to a more high profile program. Others including Julian would have been the showcased player this year but chose to leave. Up until this event Rice has been free and clear of the sleaze that can be the NCAA. Coaches and players cheat and the people left behind are the ones penalized. I know that Rhoades can and will turn it around but more years to come back from whatever really happened. How ironic that Ben Braun who I originally thought would turn things around but instead flew us into the ground, was the color commentator for the new coaches first game.

You mean that's not enough?

That was more than enough for the first round of transfers but was that why the second group and wasnt there even a third group that left? Didn't Greenspan leave before Braun? Was it ever determined if Braun was collateral damage or part of the problem?

I think recent NCAA history has shown a lot of schools who have suffered through the same type of roster defections that Rice went through. It's more a testament to the state of college basketball than anything Rice-related. UH across town probably has had as many high level guys leave as Rice the past few years.

Aren't athletic scholys only awarded for one year at a time in BB ? That could be another cause of turnover in many programs.

It's technically the same way in football, although I think basketball scholarships are "stripped" for lack of performance more frequently than in football.

It wasn't just the high-level guys. Braun signed 16 scholarship players between 2008 and 2011. Of those 16, only Frizzelle, T.Jackson, and Gearhart played all 4 years. That is an 81% attrition rate across 3.5 recruiting classes.

I know Tulane had a year where they lost multiple good players but I don't think they or UH had the sustained, top-to-bottom attrition that we did.
