best of luck to ralph. He was fun to watch the past 3 years and wishing him the best with Tennessee. He had a great career and will never forget the great TD at Vanderbilt in one of our bowl games.

My thoughts exactly.

The kid succeeded here as a super shifty scatback.

Must have been as big a surprise to him as it was to us that one year later we were decided to run a between the tackles ground pound game and that he was suddenly supposed to be our 5'-7" 161 pound Earl Campbell.

I am still not quite over that stupidity. I am convinced our staff never bothered to watch the years of game tape available to them that would have shown them who they had and what they did well.

That's the first thing that every new staff should do.

Good for him, glad he gets to reunite with a coaching staff who actually knows how serious of a weapon he is. Thanks for the years of service Ralph, it was great to have you in Red and Black.

Abernathy got carries because Tion Green couldn't pass protect and Hosey Williams was still adjusting to his new team. Overall, his utilization (or under-utilization) in the Tuberville/Gran offense was light years different from Jones/Bajakian's.

His 2nd year in the Jones system was not nearly as effective his freshman year. I think everyone knew to key on him.

It was more the case of there being players on the current roster who do what he does much better than he can anymore.

Actually, IMO we have nobody who does what he does how he does it. Issue is to tap into his skill set you have to game plan for him. Granted Gran was a RB coach for 30 years and I doubt he had to shoehorn a little guy like RDAIV at Auburn or Florida State. Bajakian on the other hand had to make a living on it prior to going to Knoxville. Guessing they find plenty of situations next year to call specific plays to do just that.

EJ, should I post the link I sent you last year from the gobearcats site with the article where Gran said they did not really watch film of prior years before Spring ball because they wanted to have everyone have a chance to show what they could do without the new staff having preconceived notions? Brilliant. And it shocks anyone they used RDAIV like Bam Morris?03-lmfao

RE: RDA IV to Tennessee...
Not the article I was thinking of...but here is another's article where he mentions the same thing. It's the football equivalent of batting your pitcher 8th.

Quote:With files upon files of video offering looks at the current collection of returning players in Bearcats uniforms at his disposal, Gran could have spent the majority of his time clicking through game after game after game of footage to asses his talent.

Instead, he only glossed over it.

"For me, I wasn't going to assume anything," Gran said. "I wanted to make sure I see it with my own eyes and go from there. I didn't want to have a preconceived notion because somebody said this guy can't play. That's not what this is about right now."

It really does not matter in the case of RDAIV. He could NOT run the ball up the gut like others we had could. He could NOT play the slot like others we had here could. He could not play QB, G, C or T. The ONLY thing he could do well (and NOT better than others) is return kicks. He is a great guy, but there really is no place for him here. Having a fall-back position like playing with his brother with a coach that had him before is a Godsend.

Couldn't agree more. Good kid by all accounts, glad he has a solid landing spot for his last year. He simply didn't have a place on this years team.

Right on. Love RDA and what his family did, but if given the opportunity to play with my brother for a year considering game plans, it's a no-brainer.
