RE: ODU Game Thread
Thanks Sam. We all feel that he is a very good coach and has a tremendous amount of talent coming next year-like 8 new players including xfers.

My Very Unofficial, not normalized to competition level. player efficiency ratings had:

Ponder 18.1
Spruill 17.8
Sherwood 16.1
Jackson 7.5
Williams 0

Everybody else was at zero. This is VERY unofficial and just my algorithm based on something that I saw on the internet. It shows however that we need to get Williams and CJ Gettys rolling to be the best team that this team can be. And, it also shows that we need the 2 freshmen to get some minutes to help this team out. PER is only a number and it doesn't show how a good defender that stays home and just defends (only drawback in that formula).

Hawks played a good half and then rolled over and gave in like in the recent past-more of a mindset the way it appears but getting tired could be part of that without proven depth. That can't happen so he will have to sub to keep sustained energy on both ends (he's gonna have to prime that pump with the freshmen). Keatts acknowledged the poor transition D by responding that UNCW didn't defend well in the 2nd half with all the transition on 3 balls. It's a killer to give great looks to good shooters. That can't happen. Everybody that can play can knock em down without good pressure. As I knew already from the exhibition, they need to really embrace their defense. Getting steals is great but you have to defend in transition and half court. The O will come but D is what separates the winners from the losers.

RE: ODU Game Thread
This team was counting on Yemi as a starter and leader. Ced is a good player, but not of the Rendleman caliber. Yemi at center would have helped in every aspect of the game we were beaten. Rebounding, defense and toughness. He would have drawn double teams as a post player, and allowed Ced some breathing room. Our bench was already short, and losing a starting center in a high volume defense and offensive scheme will be devastating this year. What we really need is Ogbodo getting some PT and producing. It's a shame this young man is another victim of automatic assumption of guilt when facing a charges by a female student. Even though he was never found guilty of anything, he will be punished regardless.

RE: ODU Game Thread
Yemi most likely makes no difference in a game at ODU with the team they have-they are better and have been better than UNCW historically.I put zero into the outcome of a game like this.I am more interested to see if they can shoot the ball and play tough at home. What might have made a difference is playing defense and rebounding the ball.ODU is not a huge team but they are quick to the ball and they want to play.
I don't think anyone can defend Yemi to any real degree from what I have read about the case he is very lucky to not face criminal charges.

You are simply wrong about Yemi. He is a quality individual, and this was/is about his skin color and his dating habits at a Southern school. He was found guilty of nothing, and in fact no official charges ever ensued...just accusations.

RE: ODU Game Thread
I don't know him at all and have never seen him play.I will say all you have to do is go to Google and there is plenty of smoke there-a video with the accusser being interviewed about the incident.I would encourage you to do some homework.I am sure he is a nice guy but that does not mean he is not without faults.
In todays world even a hint of something like this is enough to not take the chance for most legit programs.I have no idea what would make you think you know him good enough to pronounce him a quality individual.I also think playing the race card these days is about as lame as you can get and I don't know how you know the race of the accusser. There is no mention of that from what I have seen.
Keatts cut two high character kids and kept this guy-not a smart move..My personal opinion is they should move on and let him go his own way.

Not that it matters, but I watched the interview, and it seemed pretty clear to me the girl was white. It shouldn't have an influence on what's going on now and I suppose we'll never know what happened given how everything played out.

I watched it again and could not tell 100% if she was white, black, red, etc. The real question is did she sound credible and I think she did.The whole race card and Tenn being a southern school is about as dumb as you can get when it comes to something as serious as this.My guess would be she is white and why that makes any difference when it comes to facts I have no idea.It is an insult in general to make a statement that stupid.

She can say all she likes, but there was never any official action taken beyond asking him to stay away from her. When you hear his side of the story, skin color makes a difference. You've only heard hers.

RE: ODU Game Thread
That's fair enough.Let's hear his side of the story and I would love to see them both take a lie detector test! But I don't buy it all and something like 95 % of rape accusations are found to be true. If,he is not guilty why not stay and fight it?He ran away as fast as could go and the fact that Buzz went for it is just another indictment on college sports and the need to win at all costs.
My best guess is he is done at UNCW but will get yet another chance because he is 6-9,250.The fact is that that they did court order him to stay away from her and just did not have enough evidence to arrest him-at that time.Try the race card with someone else-I am not buying that either. She has nothing to gain by going public with this and anybody with a lick of common sense knows that.
UNCW basketball should get away from him ASAP and not look back.Keatts cuts 2 kids, who by all accounts were high character and good students but keeps this guy?It makes no sense to me.

RE: ODU Game Thread
Yemi transferring should not lead to an assumption of guilt. While rape is a problem at schools there is also a problem of wrongful accusations, which make it hard for police to believe actual victims. A UNCW female student made a rape accusation just a few years ago that was overturned when the girl's story didn't jive and she redacted, admitting she made up the false accusation.

I'm not saying that's definitely what happened here. But it is very true that male students do get falsely accused, and when that happens, they have no resources available to restore their image. They become marginalized by the rest of the student body. If this is what happened here it makes perfect sense for Yemi to transfer out rather than "stay and fight" when no one is around to fight for him.

Again, maybe he did this and he's a horrible human being. But we shouldn't be making assumptions either way. We'll have to let this all play out and see what the evidence says.

The problem is, you'll never see any evidence, just accusations. And, because of the current climate related to sexual assault, Yemi will be "punished", regardless of if he is ever found guilty of anything. Don't forget, this is over a year old, and nothing came of it except a no contact order. But, he'll pay, and it's flat out wrong.

RE: ODU Game Thread
I don't see a player like him making a difference for the program but he could really damage a very fragile team that is trying to get back to respectable.
Many athletes have been given a pass for this type of behavior in the past and Tenn has had a history of covering for them over the years.I am glad to see some guys finally pay the price even if they don't see the courtroom. If he was 100% innocent and had people backing him up he would still be at Tenn but they told him to leave. That pretty much tells me he did something and they were ready to get him out of there as quick as possible.
To try make him seem like the victim is an absolute joke.I could care less if it is 10 years old, that does not make it right. The court saw something and issued the order. The university and the basketball program saw something and told him to leave.
That is all I know about it.

Your ignorance of university disciplinary systems is evident. I wouldn't trust them with me or my kids...ever.

I played and I fully understand the process.I also know it has always favored the male athlete and to say otherwise is true ignorance. If you don't trust it I suggest you try to correct what you think is wrong.

RE: ODU Game Thread
North Carolina recently became the first state in history to allow students facing a university disciplinary system to be represented by an attorney. That is a HUGE step towards fairness for students facing the stacked deck of university disciplinary systems. This will hopefully be enacted in other states because it is the right thing to do.

That might help both sides. The thing I dislike the most, is that it is done off the books-to protect student rights but it seems to always leave at least some doubt.

RE: ODU Game Thread
I don't know if Yemi is innocent or not. I do know that the only punishment came from a university committee. That being after the DA determined the evidence wasn't there to prosecute, and after Yemi was already leaving the school. I first heard he was told he had to transfer. And now I hear he chose to leave to get away from the controversy and get a fresh start. Could have been somewhere in between. But, I question a group representing the school punishing Yemi even though, legally there was not enough evidence. Now, if they had evidence, then they should have share it with the DA and let justice be served.
