New Stadium/Tailgating Details for Next Year
Well, they were new details to me and I haven't heard them mentioned on this board yet.

My friend and I were taking a break from the cold in the club area last night and were watching the broadcast when they showed the renderings for the new stadium. A young woman heard us talking about the new stadium and walked up. She introduced herself, but I forget her name and said she was in development or something and was heavily involved with the new stadium. She had a very official looking ID on a lanyard. So, we talked to her for a few minutes.

*I asked her about the east side. I first asked her if there were any renderings/pictures of the East side because I've sure as heck not seen them. She reacted to the question in a way that made me feel like she would like to see them released, but there is something holding that up. So, there are renderings, but obviously they haven't been released.

*Since the stairs are gone, I asked how people would get to the upper level on the east side. She said that there will be a skywalk that will connect the Sheakley lawn level with that upper level.

*Sheakley lawn is going away and that area will be a big gate for the new Nippert

*They're working with Kroger on the South-East of campus to set up tailgating there. They are well aware of the lack of prime tailgating space and are working it.

*Here's big news. She said that they are working hard on getting permission to close down Calhoun on game days. They want to turn that stretch into something like a Beale or Bourbon St. before games. Fans could hang out in the street and bounce from bar to bar.

That's all I can remember for now. If I think of anything else, I'll post it.

That is big news. Especially if they can somehow incorporate some of the tailgating lots on the opposite side of Calhoun.

Of course, this will give fans another excuse as to why they didn't make it into the game until the end of the first quarter ("I can't believe Calhoun was closed and traffic was terrible!"), but I really like that concept.

Trying to fight traffic on Calhoun street before game time is dumb as it is, makes sense to close it down. That would be pretty cool. Sad to see Sheakly Lawn go though, students love that place.

Awesome info, Aero . Sounds like UC is now addressing the entire gameday experience.

Tailgating area in the southeast corner of campus would put it around Cory Garage and the area between the baseball and soccer fields .

Shutting down Calhoun and creating a Bearcat at the Banks type atmosphere they had earlier this year downtown would be kick A** . I hope its logistically possible

If anyone doesn't think that was a test phase to how they could do it in Clifton, they weren't paying attention. I would be ecstatic if they managed to close down that block and have the bar owners open up...would be perfect for us due to the lack of actual "tailgating" facilities, doing a Block Party would be 100000% the way to go.

I think that was way more due to the fact that there was nothing to do around there. The only bars are Martino's and Goodfellows, and I'm fairly certain most of our fans wouldn't be interested in venturing into those waters. With the inclusion of the new development on Calhoun, I could see it be VERY successful. The amount of open air establishments (Keystone, Brass Tap, St. Clair, hell even Lime and Starbucks) as well as the outdoor plaza space and the UPA restaurants I see it being really cool if it gets good secondary support (I'm looking at you Glier's and John Morrell).

Hopefully they allow open containers in that tailgating block too. Let people walk from bar to bar, have vendors outside, etc... that would be a great environment!

Singing to the choir here, but I'm really stoked about the Clahoun shut down. We like to wander around rather than set up camp and this just works.

She sounded like she they didn't really know what they were going to do with McMillan. She said they might make it two way (Wouldn't work imho). I think they should just shut them both down.

Since the Open Container Legislation was brought up, it looks like things have been moving in the State House (I know...crazy, right?!) that could help bring about our wishes of a "Beale-like" atmosphere for the Calhoun/McMillan Corridor.

That might be the only reasonable legislation I've seen from Kearney recently.

I have my doubts about shutting down Calhoun, but McMillan also?

First, shutting down Calhoun has the potential to really screw up game-day traffic. Add McMillan, and life may become unbearable for those coming from I-75 & West.

The second hurdle involves emergency/safety issues. McMillan is a main feeder street for Christ Hospital and a secondary feeder for the UC medical facilities.

Probably objections from Fire and Emergency resulting from the need for access to the buildings between Calhoun and McMillan (and feeder streets).
