It was the wrong one, but not by Hatfield. The play Hatfield actually called was a dive into the line. The quarterback was confused because the play was to be run out of a formation that was used for pass plays, and therefore he called the pass to the tight end. It fooled everyone, including the Rice coaching staff. If I recall correctly, it was the first completion to a Rice tight end in over two seasons. Unfortunately, it went for naught as the Owls missed a field goal at the end of the half, but Rice did go on to win the game.

Worst decision ever? Cinn/ECU
I always wondered about that call. Thanks for clearing that up.

That was the official line after the game. I've always wondered, though.

One problem with these new punt formations is that there aren't a lot of good fake options.

If you want an even more bizarre fake punt.. try this one. You'll need to scroll down to the GIF where you see an Arkansas St. player literally clutch his chest and fall back a la the Nestea plunge. Doesn't pull up faking a hamstring pull, but instead does the worst fake heart attack you've ever seen. Bizarre in its own right, but the play is executed (and intercepted) before the heart attack victim (who is ostensibly the intended receiver), even tries to get up. The only person on the field who pays him any mind is a Miami defensive player who sends the Ar St. player into another dimension when he starts to stand up.

RE: Worst decision ever? Cinn/ECU
New nomination for worst decision:
Notre Dame, leading Northwestern early in the 4th quarter 34-29, scores a TD to make it 40-29. Brian Kelly opts to go for the two-point conversion, and the Irish fail, leaving it at an 11 point margin. Gee, that would mean that the Wildcats could tie with a TD, 2-point conversion, and a FG. Northwestern did just that.
Go for the regular extra point, and make Northwestern score two TDs. I just don't get it.

How about running wide on 2nd down after Northwestern had used their last time out? Ball gets stripped Northwestern goes down the field in about 1:20 gets a 40+FG to tie and wins it in OT. I wasn't paying close enough attention at the time to see if ND could actually run out the clock but they sure wouldn't have left the time that they gave to NW with that fumble.

That was discussed earlier this year. I think the fainting goat was an ineligible receiver because of the formation. There's not much else for him to do on the play ... the context is that the HC at ASU was an assistant at UNC (?) where they punked the QB in practice by having the entire offense do the fainting goat.
