Bowen did a good job on getting us Fuente, I'm sure he'll do a fine job of getting us the right Bball coach as well.
Just to clarify, Fuente was hired before Bowen. Fuente was hired by Alan Graf and committee with basically no input from RC. Bowen was not hired until months afterward.

Yes. I acknowledged that I was incorrect in a previous post. Totally forgot about the fact that Bowen was hired after.

I still have faith that he'll make a great hire.

That is totally correct my friend. Alan Graf and the committee hired Fuente. RC hired Pastner.

There is an implied assumption here that we can hire someone better.

Arkansas couldn't. Tennessee couldn't. Auburn had to take a chance on two-strike Pearl.

I don't think you do anything until you have the next coach already in hand.

Trust me, Pearl isn't only on hand. He's standing at the door with his box of belongings.

It was an exhibition game. CBC is an excellently coached team with veteran guards. Our guards have minimal D1 experience. Experienced guards win games like this. That is exactly what happened.

Arkansas got exactly who they wanted in Mike Anderson... After Nolan left they very likely could have had Bill Self but went with Stan Heath (fresh off a Sweet 16 run) due to the racial allegations being made by Nolan. After Heath, they struggled because of how bad of shape Heath left their APR situation.

If you hire a coach before you fire your coach, you hired a loser.

With all due respect, what happened was we got beat by a DII team and that should never, ever happen. That's what happened and it was an embarrassment.

CBU is an excellent, Memphis D2 school that regularly challenges Memphis in exhibitions. Yes, even with St. John as coach.

Nothing will be decided until Feb, so he'll get a shot to right the ship from his current 0-0 record

OMG when will you people admit the man can't coach . How long do you have to see failure before you realize it ?

I have no clue how good a coach he is, but he's made tourneys and will get the season before they decide if they want to keep him.

I'm not ready to jump off the Hernando-DeSoto just yet (unlike seemingly everyone else here!), but I don't agree with this line of thinking.

Exhibitions against D2 teams should be automatic if you have D1 talent and coaching. There's no sugar-coating this one or softening the blow. It stinks. Bad. And it is a legitimate cause for concern. Hopefully it serves as a wake-up call for our guys and they do like Syracuse did that year they lost to LeMoyne and went on to dominate the regular season and become a 1 seed.

Seems like I remember that the Orange played man-to-man the entire game after never having practiced the art.....sort of like a 'teaching a lesson' experiment. I would think that qualifies as a caveat. There is no excuse for that exhibition at the Forum last night.

Bowen hired Fuente while he was the AD at San Jose State?

You're right forgot. That was Brad Martin and Alan Graf. Maybe they can help?

You're not too good at this...Shirley Raines was our President when Fuente was hired.

(11-13-2014 07:46 AM)NJ1 Wrote:  yeah. Wichita State is not going to be pretty. It never was, anyway-- it was always going to be hard for us to beat that team, this year, this early in the year with so many new pieces. But if we look even 25% better than we did last night, it's still going to be so bad as to be difficult to watch.

If it stays this bad, this might be the year we cull the bandwagoners from the real fans, if you know what I mean. Basketball's equivalent of the "4100 club." Supposedly fans left early last night even as the game was going into overtime. Not good.

Of course, this season was always going to be about "how much do they improve as the year goes on?" that's the real thing to watch this year. If they're not rounding into form by conference play, we're in trouble. That's the time to start asking the tough questions, though-- not necessarily after this exhibition loss.

But this one certainly puts one on alert.

I missed last night's game so I'm not positive, but to be fair this happens a lot of the time. Many people take the bus transit into the games, and if I'm not mistaken, those leave at a pre-determined time. So if a game runs late, the buses still leave. That may be wrong, but I thought some people told me that before.

now back to being pissed at the coach (I am)

Pastner was a horrible coach the day we hired him, he's continued to be an underachieving, bad coach throughout the years and tonight proves he hasn't learned a damned thing and may be even worse than the day he was hired.

Please let this end.

Our basketball program has floundered while attempting to let this little pretend-coach learn how to coach.

The only thing he's proven is that he can take top 5 recruiting classes to get their azz stomped in the 1st or 2nd round of the tourney. I would compare him to Quinn Snyder except Snyder proved a helluva lot more than Pastner. He made an elite 8. Pastner has zero chance of that....ever.

Our recruiting has fallen off. Skal is gone. The only reason we have the Lawson brothers is because we hired the daddy. Even at that, these are local players. Where are the national top 40-50 recruits nowadays? That is a distant memory for Pastner. The guy is done.

I found myself rooting for CBU to win just so we could get this ridiculous sputtering era of Tiger Basketball over with. Let's hire a real coach and give ourselves a real chance to do big things.

GO TIGERS!

^^^^ This. TrUth.
