RE: Official Game Thread: @ Valparaiso
Valpo will be an interesting test again this year. They are very big on the front line ( 6’10, two 6’9”s, two 6’8”s, three 6’7”s) with a plus 4.2 rebounding margin, but their guards are not big and not that good and we should have a real advantage in quickness in the backcourt (they averaged 14.9 turnovers to 10.9 for their opponents, and 5.6 steals compared to 7.1 steals for their opponents). They killed us on the boards last year 45-28, but we snatched 14 steals and forced 24 turnovers, while losing only 5 steals and 9 turnovers ourselves. Stats are last year's and this year's team may, of course, be different.

This year they have been picked to finish 4th in the Horizon League (Green Bay is first, Cleveland State second and Detroit third, just ahead of Valpo). 6’9” 225 soph. Alec Peters (12.7 pts on .383 from 3 with 4.8 rpg) is picked to make All-Conference.

They were also pretty unimpressive in their only exhibition, winning 60-52 over Grand Valley State, who hung with them all night. But then, so were we.

DEPARTURES:
They lose leading scorer 6'1" 190 G LaVonte Dority (15.7 ppg), third leading scorer 6'5" 200 G Jordan Coleman (8.1 ppg) and 5th leading scorer 6'10" 235 Bobby Capobianco (6.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg)

RETURNING GUARDS:
6’0” 160 Sr. Lexus Williams, 23.4 min., 6.5 pts. on .383 from 3, 2.1 rpg;
6’1” 185 Jr. Keith Carter, 18.5 min., 5.7 pts on . 400 from 3, 1.8 rpg

RETURNING BIGS:
6’9” 225 So. Alec Peters, 29.6 min., 12.7 pts on .383 from 3 (57-149),
6’7” 230 So., Jubril Adekoya, 19.1 min., 5.8 pts on .172 from 3, 3.4 rpg
6’10” 245 Sr., Vashil Fernandez, 19.3 min., 4.3 pts, no 3’s, 5.1 rpg
6’9” 220 Sr., David Chadwick, 7.0 min., 2.9 pts on 4-10 from 3, 1.1 rpg

I haven’t had time to research the new guys who include 6’8” 180 Sr/Jr G/F Victor Nickerson a transfer from Charlotte, 6'1" 195 Fr. G Tevonn Walker a top ten Canadian from Montreal, and 6’3” 215 Jr. G Darien Walker an All-Region JUCO who got 16 pts on 2-3 from 3 and 4 rebounds versus Grand Valley State. He could be a physical matchup problem for us.

We’ll need sharper, more focussed play from our guards, and much better defense. And Giplaye, Bates, Williams and Banks will get their first public test against real bigs.

I think this game will be a good indicator of where we stand. Looking forward to this one.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Valparaiso
Early season college basketball is frequently pretty sloppy, even at the high major, power conference level. Both Valpo and the Bucs are replacing major pieces, and both are coming off less than stellar exhibitions. It could be ugly.

But it will be a marker of progress. Last year we looked pretty rough for the first 6 games. This will probably still be a work in progress.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Valparaiso
On his call in show tonight, Murry singled out Ron Giplaye a couple of times for mention as the big who had been separating himself from the others and playing well in the Virginia Tech scrimmage. He said that Alex Bates has been hurt. Also mentioned that Lester Wilson had been playing well.

I hope that Bates is ready to play against Valpo. He's about the same size as their bigs, and I don't remember their big guys being particularly fast.

More praise for Lester:

He’s playing much better than he ever has in his career,” Bartow said. “His first two years he did some good things, but right now he’s playing better than he’s ever played. He’s playing with confidence. He’s shooting the ball well. His defense has gone up a notch and his rebounding has gone up a notch.”

Some other tidbits in that article: Bates hasn't practiced since Milligan with "a knee issue". Perhaps someone else will have to defend Valpo's high scoring 6'9" Alex Peters, who will go out and pop the 3. Who will defend him?

Interesting that he singles out Desonta along with Petey as running the point. His 5 assists and 1 turnover against Milligan may be a sign of good things to come there.

Overstreet and Banks are mentioned. Tommy Williams is not. Just an oversight? I hope that Tommy gets some minutes in these early games. It didn't take him long to make an impression against Milligan.

No mention of injury to Rashawn. Hope that he's back and ready to go. When those 3's are dropping everything else gets kicked up a notch for the Bucs.

Does anyone know if ESPN3 or the socon digital network supports chromecast? I'd love to watch the Valpo game on a big screen.

It looks like Lexus Williams is out due to injury. Valpo's coach briefly discusses ETSU at 4:40:

If you use Chrome for your computer's browser and have the Chromecast extension enabled I wouldn't see why not. I have watched FirstRow and other sports streaming sites to the chromecast and then to my big screen with no problems.

My question would be since ESPN3 has picked it up, will it also be streamed via the Horizon League site? I don't get ESPN3. I will be at a HS football playoff game but was hoping to see some of the 2nd half afterwards.

This guy likes ETSU for the win (+7.5), emphasis on offense. If we can come out focused, Giplaye keeps it up, and another big contributes at least modestly, I like ETSU, too. If we fail to heat up quickly enough or disappear for 10 minutes on offense, I see a struggle. Maybe it comes down to rebounding and points allowed in the paint.

Giplaye has been the most consistent post player but will Murry start him? I'm going to guess no. MuBar will probably break out the Ouija board and ask the spirits what they think.

Vegas has Valpo as a 9 point favorite. Opened at 11, so the money is going the Bucs way.

If Giplaye is strong, and Rashawn is healthy, I see no reason why we can't take this. It will have to be a B+ or A game though. We aren't strong enough physically to take much of anything half-stepping it.

Based on Murry's praise for Ron, and the apparent injury to Bates, I think that we can be pretty sure that Murry starts Giplaye.

I think we'll have a better chance if Tommy Williams gets some good minutes, too. It's mostly a hunch, but I think that Tommy's got the experience and game toughness that can produce for us, despite his lack of height. I thought, based on his record last year, that he was a good bet, and I was bolstered in that thinking by his eager and purposeful play against Milligan, albeit in garbage time. I hope that Murry does not wait for garbage time to try him against Valpo.

We need our guards to slam on the defense that produced so many steals and turnovers against Valpo last year. They will beat us in the paint and on the boards again, and we must gain an advantage elsewhere.

It may be too soon to expect that we'll be fully ready. But this team, with Rashawn, Jalyn, Lester and a healthy Giplaye, can be really good. If not tonight, then soon. There are lots of good pieces, and it should be just a matter of finding the right way to fit them together. The early returns on Giplaye have definitely left me feeling more positive about ETSU's possibilities than I was feeling before the Milligan game and Murry's comments on the Virginia Tech scrimmage.

Basketball demands reason and strategy up front, then a darn lot of faith when game time comes. Very pleased by the turn of fate that brings us a new Giplaye. And I think Williams will adjust quickly. Junk yard dogs do what they do anywhere.
