Of a bigger concern to me is that you'd have to assume that this person didn't think they'd get in trouble for what they said.

Even Klansmen know their opinions aren't popular and that they need to be circumspect in expressing them... they just sometimes (often) don't give a damn what others think. I just can't imagine that a teacher didn't think they might get in trouble for saying this on social media. This couldn't have been the first time they ever expressed such an opinion, and I guess nobody bothered to tell them it was offensive?

It's amazing that the same people who passed through the system can have so little faith in it.

Oh c'mon bud... There are embarrassments on both sides of the aisle... convincing us all that we were the exceptions.

For the record, most of my pre-college education was outside the U.S. system.

The truth is I would be terminated if I actually posted those things that teacher posted on Twitter, particularly the rebuttal tweets AFTER being exposed on the original tweet. The personal accountability factor is a major difference between state jobs and the private sector. Teachers post that sh!t and laugh about it.

Small wonder about 75% of my coworkers send their kids to private schools. Public schools are - with rare exception - major dumpster fires with all the YOU OWES ME attitudes, violence, sexual predators (a large number of students and regrettably some teachers), and unlimited ignorance reminiscent of the movie Idiocracy.

We who "passed through the system" saw -- up close and personal -- what really goes on in that system, day by day. Many of us were not impressed.

Nah...this was the result of slavery and instintutionalized racism stemming from the Ferguson, Mo murder of innocent child Michael Brown. You people are so racist. This poor woman couldn't help but post something like this on social media because of all the hate, discrimination and slavery her great, great, great, great ancestors faced. More understanding and tolerance is needed here, not personal accountability.

I disagree. I think far more people benefit from public school than don't. That doesn't mean that the institution should not be reformed.

I would welcome any sort of reform of our school system. I'm simply saying don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

The first step to fixing a problem is admitting you have one. The second step is coming to grasps with the scale and scope of your problem.

We have a problem. The public K-12 education system is damaging the overwhelming majority of kids that pass through it, at every level.

That's encouraging to hear, and I join you in that attitude.

Sad to say, our views are negated by the institutional leadership of the NEA, the AFT, and its allies and supporters in the media and the academic/political world (which includes by and by, almost every elected Democrat in the country), who are reflexively and implacably against anything that would help to achieve that goal. In 25-30 years of observation, I have only heard two items on their agenda: 1. "We need more money" and 2. Opposition to anything that would increase or expand the presence of private education in the K-12 phase.

And that's it. They really don't have anything else to say or recommend other than that. I predict that nothing substantially positive will occur in this sphere until and unless their political power is broken.

The handwriting is already on the wall.

The public system is going to be, if it isn't already, the leading source of inequality moving forward.

Anybody with a clue and the cash is putting their kids in private schools, and if you have more cash even better private schools. Meanwhile, the poor continue to languish behind stuck in ****** public schools. The same people campaigning for equality and economic access like to forget about this fact. And, make no mistake, it is a fact.

The poor will only get poorer, not because of unfairness, racism, or anything else but because the public education monopoly robbed them of a future by miring itself in bureaucracy, politics, and powerful special interests. Attempts to take otherwise undeserving children, such a affirmative action, will only result in the less qualified and capable among us being promoted to positions of power while lacking the skills required. In that instance they suffer, and so does everybody else.

What, you're saying that public schools don't get enough?? You kidding me? In fact, the public schools that are least successful (large urban schools) are the ones funneled the most money, ie. they have the highest expenditure per pupil - and it makes no difference.

Many public schools turn out students that are prepared for college or whatever else the student wants to do. It's just not in places where large swaths of the parents don't give a sh!t.

Duncanville School and police department were inundated with complaints about the teacher’s tweet.

This morning, Duncanville High School administration met with her and suspended her without pay pending discharge:

They released the following statement:

Quote: Early this morning district officials met with Ms. Hegwood, the teacher who stated reprehensible
personal opinions on her personal social media account. The district took swift action and exercised the
fullest disciplinary action allowed under district policy. Ms. Hegwood was placed on suspension without
pay pending discharge. Under state law, a school district’s Board of Trustees “fires” staff members, and
the district will pursue that action with the board soon. In the meantime, the teacher has been placed
on suspension without pay pending discharge.

The district wants the community to know that the actions of this one individual does not and should
not represent the school district. Every day, two hundred and forty Duncanville High School teachers
provide a school environment that fosters academic excellence, good citizenship and respect for others.
Teachers give their life’s work to shaping the future, and this one individual does not represent our staff
or our district.

Looks like Hegwood, who, ironically, taught English, may have sunk her career, at least at Duncanville.

Isn't this the lady that Obama just submitted for AG?

You forgot the period.

Sounds personal.

It's just upsetting the way people look at teachers nowadays. When I was growing up, my parents listened to my teacher more than they listened to me.

Today, if I even attempt to explain to a parent why their student is a discipline problem, it suddenly becomes an indictment on me.

So now you know how police officers feel...right?

There are good and bad teachers. Bad teachers are generally unionized.

Yes. Sir. School choice is the way to go. Charter schools to compete with "unionized public schools". Private schools.

That isn't saying much. There has been a proliferation of remedial programs in today's colleges. Why? It's because students are so far behind.

The kids who are succeeding that come out of public school are doing so IN SPITE of those schools, not because of them.

The kids who are relying on their school to prepare them, teach them, and instill something in them fail en masse.

The more you look the more you will see that today's public K-12 system is damaging the nation's youth and leaving them in a worse condition than they were before. In fact, there is scientific proof of this. The longer our kids are in our public schools the worse they score on international tests.

It's time to accept the reality, which is brutal. Our system is an utter failure and it is destroying the nation's children. It is not a force for good, nor is it benefiting the nation or the children or communities it purports to serve.

No. What I am saying is that many of the people who need education the most don't have the money to go to private school.

Right. So give them vouchers, correct? Let them choose where they want to go, or where they want their children to go. You are pro choice, are you not?
