Wasn't Utah ranked like 16th in '96 when we beat them so badly in Houston?
We beat unbeaten (5-0?) and IIRC, ranked, New Mexico on the road in 1997 (I get the year of this game and Utah mixed up, they were different, but both 7-4 years).
At the time, it was played before the largest gathering of any kind in the state of New Mexico.

New Mexico was 6-0 going into the game, but unranked (at least by AP). Rice was coming off a 27-14 victory over #21 BYU the prior week.
Rice then went to SMU and lost 24-6 the following week. What a letdown that was.
That seemed to happened a bit in the 90's. We'd have a quite a few good wins, but couldn't carry that through to a great season.

Please don't talk about that game-I was there and I don't think the team ever left Houston-one of the worse losses during Hatfield's tenure.

What game? It's no wonder they didn't leave. I don't even think they play college football in the stadium where it was supposed to have been played anymore.

Watching ECU/Cincy..................talk about a deserted stadium. Our crowds look tremendous in comparison.

RE: Marshall pre-game chatter
I'll give them this - Thursday night, bitter cold, not in the campus stadium, but in the city's pro football stadium (which is not exactly right next to the university community).
Not to derail this thread from its original purpose, but there's a lot of just chuck the ball up and hope a receive comes down with it. Given that ECU and Cincy each have at least one extremely good receiver on each side, that can make some sense, but it's amazing the number of "prayers" these QBs are just chucking up there.

Nobody gave Stanford a shot b/c of Oregon gaudy stats/blow-outs. Margin of victory almost 4 TD's for one team and less than 1 TD for the other. All thought blow-out.
Oregon margin of victory prior four Pac-12 games before playing Stanford game 51-26
Stanford prior four Pac-12 games before playing Oregon 25-21 (includes a L to Utah)
I think similar dynamic here. I think our running game, offensive diversity, and run D gives slows them down like they have not seen yet. If we can a) improve our deep ball skills/containment of Cato for play extension (which we did not do at Notre Dame but did do in C-USA game) and b) either make a play on ST or not give one up (both of which we did in C-USA game last year too) than we have a shot for W.
If we can't, we will get beat but really hard to see a 3TD woodshed game like Vegas is thinking. Marshall line has Rice as bigger underdogs than both Notre Dame and A&M line (albeit by a couple points). One of those teams just beat the #3 team in country and other was one bad offensive interference call from beating the #2 team in country (#1 at the time). Marshall is a good team but not in the zip code of that level of play.

I think you may be surprised this season. This is by far better than our #10 99 team. They may beat them by 20 IMO. Id put us on the field with anyone this year? and i would not be delusional to expect a close game. Safe travels to all and hope its a clean, injury free game.
Score 56-21 Herd, but its close through 2.5 qtrs and your looking good at half due to the run game and TOP, 7 pt margin. Then the gas is out of the tank and we pull away.

This is the kind of game that may hinge on which team fails to score with each of its possessions. IMHO, that's how Rice lost the ODU game, as they essentially stopped themselves with mistakes on a few possessions and ODU never really stopped themselves, plus extended their own drives out of their punt formation. I think Rice is more likely to stop themselves than Marshall is, but I also think that Rice's defense will step up at least a couple of times for big stops. I think Rice has defensive depth, so it won't be a matter of tiring out in the game. I'm not confident that they can play 4 quarters without giving up 2-3 long plays leading to touchdowns, though.
