TU v SMU Observations
TU was and wasn't the better team imo. Against a disfunctional opponent who already has a shaken and stirred coaching staff and players that are mentally bruised, we made a game of it. Our QB play is still below average "at best" - but at least DE didn't make the bad throws on a consistent basis this time. But folks, I'm going to say something controversial a bit - We have a really good set of receivers - IMO. Our receiving corps is one of the best in the league. Garrett, Lucas and Atkinson are outstanding talents and on par with most in the Big 12. We aren't deep, but we have 3 that have the talent we need. They make DE a decent QB, not vice versa.

The defense has tackling issues and speed issues that were created from a loss of young talent we've recently incurred . Players like Darnell Walker, Kwame Sexton, Cory Rahmings, Joe Bean, Dalton Rodriguez could be the difference now and in the future, but they are gone forever. One of the things that seperates an OU or OSU from us recently has been that those two schools find a way to keep the good young players they have. And BB's solution seemed to be to recruit "walkons" to replace them - players that were in some form or another, rejected by those other schools that are beating us now. That really isn't a solution imo at a school that has high academic standards to begin with.

So can we win another game? My opine is nada. We should be a 2-10 FB team with a coaching staff that will be looking for new jobs. Now folks, I think what usually happens is to throw the good coaches out with the bad. I think that is somewhat of a mistake at TU. The number one asst that should be kept is Dan Bitson. He has done a very good job with those receivers and has also done a very good job recruiting local talent. I can't see a reason for letting him go. I'd also consider retaining Denver Johnson who has been both a good recruiter and good line coach under difficult circumstances. But folks here's another controversial move - I'd also consider the retaining of Adam Blankenship. He's done a very good job and merited retention. But I'm not sure he'd take the job or would be considered. After that, probably all the coaches should look elsewhere. I was a big fan of Guy, but his talent has been diminhsed so much that there isn't a lot of success as reason to keep him on. He's a victim of program shortfalls.

I think we do have a chance to beat the spread against UCF next week. UCF is a team that plays "inconsisitently" and has issues of their own.

But at least i can still say - Go TU!
