have not felt this proud since the D Williams era.. not sure how to act , feels good to finally compete again...

Oh, grasshopper, I tell you we had great wins in the '70's and before then, and it was lots of fun. We used to be DB U.

Put the mantle of pride on and expect to win! A new era has begun.

Yep in the 60s-70s we could compete with anyone we played, SEC or otherwise but nice to see us on the rise NOW.

People do not realize how awful Memphis was under Larry Porter. Fuente inherited an FCS roster. Bowl eligible in Year 3

West deserves most of the 'credit' for what Fuente inherited.

Yep. Agree with that too. JF has done an excellent job. Hope we can keep him (& his staff) around for years to come.

I disagree. Tommy's last year, although he did not win many games, the team was competitive in most games. If Fuente would have inherited Tommy's team versus Porter, the turnaround would have been quicker. Porter inherited a more talented team than Fuente.

Explain how. Porter was here for 3 years. Hayes is the only player left from West's recruits. West's recruits were Sr.'s when Fuente took over if I am not mistaken.

Recruiting under Porter was not bad...I believe higher rated than now. They simply did not buy in and he was unfortunately in over his head at the head position.

Hiring an unqualified coach while the talent cupboard was bare yielded a predictable disastrous failure. I will never forget or forgive local media for insisting that hiring Porter was a "no-brainer". Bringing in a coach who had never even been a coordinator and lacked communication ability was foolish.

It seemed that we also had trouble getting those kids on campus, and then keeping them. I remember a lot of "John Brown has left the program" threads.

Larry Porter was trying to get the AOB to enforce the brand standards especially the wearing of the gray uniforms. Sadly, it caught on everywhere but at Memphis.

Porter's assistants had little respect for him & were relatively low paid. That with Porter's lack of experience was a bad mix.

Not true. Why do you think West ranted on the way out? No money was available to recruit with. The shelf was almost depleted during West's last years because most of the money was given to the Cal.

Porter was not head coaching material but these Seniors are his, including some red shirted Juniors.

How quickly we forget. LP was here for 2 years.

While 2007 and 2008 were bowl years that was more a function of a pillow fight level strength of schedule (go look for yourself - we were weak; the opponents were weaker) than anything else and in 2009 the bottom fell out on TW. The talent level on the team had been in serious, steady decline.

Do I think LP was ready to be a head coach? No, I don't.

Did he inherit a mess? Yes, he did.

Did he make it any better? No, not really.

The blame for the disaster Fuente found when he arrived was due in pretty equal parts to West, Porter, and RC (RC's handlers).

I agree. Porter was simply awful, for many reasons, and Tommy was checked out in his last couple of years here.
Fuente has been fantastic. Beyond expectations.

Tommy continues to check out.
During our game with MTSU, the announcers kept repeating over and over how little of a pass rush that MTSU was getting on Paxton.
