I think this is close to the truth. It is a fact that very few if any football programs not in the power conferences actually "makes" money. Of course there are other less tangible benefits that can indirectly increase a university's revenue, but all the study has to say is that X dollars must be invested and less than X will be returned in direct revenue, and Watts and the BOT will have the fig leaf they need to cover their shame.

That should have been done well before now.

That is why the study is being done. Watts long term plan is to shut down football, but Mackin is using this study to show how that will affect Athletics as a whole.

I am convinced football is in trouble too that is why I have emailed Watts and Mackin. In my email to Watts I pointed out how UAB has been denied many things needed to build a successful program. I posed the question what makes Soccer and/or basketball immune to the sabotages and non investments football has dealt with in thee past?

That's why the athletic department wouldn't initiate a study mid season especially before recruiting season if it wasn't a serious situation. I am not convinced Mackin is the bad guy here. But, watts on the other hand. . .

I thought the study had been going on for "over a year." Did I misunderstand that? If not, some of the data will be from McGee's dumpster fire last year.

My understanding from the Watt's non answer was that there has been a campus wide strategic plan in place that looks at the return of investment for different programs. My opinion is the third party has been consulted because Watts and Mackin have reached a disagreement over the need of UAB football. That is purely my take of the situation.
