Southern Miss about to get slammed by the NCAA
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/22584...ource-says

Quote:The Southern Miss basketball program is under investigation by the NCAA for potential rules violations that occurred under former coach Donnie Tyndall, who is now the head coach at Tennessee.

A source close to the program told Bleacher Report that the NCAA's investigation centers on how tuition, living expenses and other fees were paid for "Prop 48" recruits who signed with the Golden Eagles but were academically ineligible out of high school or junior college.

Even though they weren't on scholarship, the players in question enrolled in classes at Southern Miss, lived in off-campus apartments and spent a year earning enough academic credits to make them eligible the following season, when they were placed on scholarship. This is standard practice under NCAA Proposition 48 rules, but the financial support these players may have received is under investigation.

This is the last thing Southern Miss needs.

LOL, so predictable by the NCAA. This is how they'll justify slapping UNC on the wrist.

Don't be silly. This was what Miko predicted was about to happen to UConn. They just chose to punish Southern Miss instead.

Somebody has to pay for UNC's violations.

Is this "Obliterate C-USA Week"? It seems like we're ignoring problems in a lot of other places and are piling on a conference that just finally rebuilt after a series of defections. It all feels completely unnecessary.

"Even though they weren't on scholarship,"

So how exactly does that work then? If they were on scholarship, okay I can see the issue...

They got paid for tuition, room and board before they were on scholarship (and before they were academically eligible).

They got paid for tuition, room and board before they were on scholarship (and before they were academically eligible).

Someone gave them money so they could go to school, and didn't have a scholarship. By this argument, any parent who pays for their student for a year (who might be an expected scholarship receiver) would be a rule breaker, right?

I can get the 'they're not academically eligible" argument, but that's the purpose of prop-48 right? To me, this just seems kinda iffy of a charge.

RE: Southern Miss about to get slammed by the NCAA
is it me, or has any what was old non-AQ program fallen as hard as Southern Miss has these last 3 years? USM had 40 losses in football the 8 years prior(2004-11)- and have had 27 now the last 3 years. Bad enough to where this years 3-6 record is a steep improvement...

No. The rules specifically permit student/athletes to receive support from their own family.

Thus, it was legal for Johnny Manziel's parents to buy him a Mercedes while he was at TAMU, but it would not have been legal for an agent to buy him a Mercedes at that time.

I'm curious who the snitch is. Kind of like who snitched on UConn's women's coach for his phone call to that Philly little league phenom. The SEC and ACC schools are masters of this, and the NCAA encourages it.

The NCAA is probably hoping it all blows over and they don't have to make an announcement.
