WMU & EMU Historical Perspective
Our EMU game is coming up. One of the things we WMU fans have been hearing a lot is, “we beat you the last three years.” First I will say congrats. Your team won those games. EMU has had two stints of beating WMU three years in a row, the other being from 1989-1991.
WMU holds the record for longest win streak. Do you remember the years 1997-2003? That was a seven game win streak. In terms of three game consecutive win streaks, we have two; 1913-1915 & 2008-2010. In terms of four game consecutive win streaks, we have two; 1978-1981 & 1992-1995.
Even if EMU wins the next game, it will take three more wins in a row to even match our seven game win streak. Ultimately, WMU the series record at 29-18-2. (Helpful Link)
May the best team win next week. Go Broncos!

1906-2013 = 108 years.
Apparently we didn't play from 1931-1973, 1916-1926, or 1908-1911. That's why. 43 + 11 + 4 = 58 years of not playing, since our first game in 1906.
Another factoid: Who played more rivalry games against each other? UM vs ND, or MSU vs ND? MSU. :)

RE: WMU & EMU Historical Perspective
There was a time (late '50s-early '60s I think) when EMU tried to de-emphasize football - cut scholarships to the point they were barely above MIAA level.
Doesn't explain why we didn't play them from early '30s until they became Major College-joined MAC in early '70s, though.

I'm thinking if we can beat EMU and CMU; and Toledo loses one of the two games against NIU and BGSU, we should have Bronco Stampede road trip to EMU to cheer for the Hurons. I'll rent a 15 passenger van and we can double their attendance!

It's EMU. EMoo. That's why. They're the green-headed step-child of the MAC. :) Actually, we probably didn't start playing them again until they joined the MAC in the 70s. If before joining the MAC they were a low-end team (like now or worse), after diminishing their program for decades, why would we go out of our way to play them? I guess it's mildly surprising that we wouldn't play them once every 4 years... but my guess is that they really sucked trying to get back to the "real" level, still wanted to play us, we said no -- so when they were good enough to possibly get back in the MAC but didn't -- they already got to the point to stop asking.

Yeah, we'll turn it from "19,000" to "38,000" with a 15 passenger van. I don't think people major in math over there. Just my guess.

I was so mad at molde when we settled for the tie. I really enjoyed that trip but it was strange. We flew in the day of the game. We were there less than 24 hours.

Didn't realize the TCU tie came during your time, Kimbo - nice! How good was TCU's program then?

Awful. Maybe 1 win? Pat Sullivan was the coach and they didn't have an identity. Funny how Patterson turned it around with several former bronco coaches on staff at various times.

RE: WMU & EMU Historical Perspective
Gentlemen,
Just to clarify a few of the statements made here. First, I don't know why Eastern didn't play Western in the twenties and thirties on any regular basis since we had very good teams then. After World War II, we did not give any scholarships, until the Dan Boisture era in 1967. We were in the IIAC with Central and five Illinois Schools which included Northern Illinois. After that, in 1963, you are correct when Eastern even deemphasized football more, joining the PAC.
When our new president came to Eastern in 1966, he decided to give scholarships in all sports, and that was when Boisture was hired from Michigan State to be our head coach. In seven years he never had a losing record, his worst was 5-4.
The goal was to get entrance into the MAC. That happened in 1971? I know that Central refused to play us during the Boisture era because they were afraid they might lose to us, I don't know if Eastern tried to schedule Western then, but we did play Toledo.

I believe that that one loss to Temple was voided as Temple had used players in that game that were disqualified.

^ You are correct, Willy.
Temple's TB (Paul Palmer I think his name was) they were touting for Heisman had taken money from an agent and was therefore ineligible.
So officially we're 7-0 against Cosby U.

Thanks for the back up. I could not recall who it was that was ineligible.
