RE: UAB dropping football?
That would really blow.

Thank goodness we don't have the same board as bUTtchug U.

Well, let's play them in the B'ham bowl for nostalga sake then.

Put the bones up on the line.

That bugs me.

I agree.
I hate uab but that makes no sense. None.

Every dime not spent on UAB football can be moved over and spent on UA football.

UAT will spend that $54 wisely.

(11-06-2014 01:36 AM)Shrack Wrote:  It's really a crap situation right now. I certainly wouldn't wish the same situation on anyone else. This whole thing is really deeper than just the football program too. You never hear about other FBS programs talking about shutting down their own athletics even though there are 20-30 FBS D1 programs worse off than UAB financially right now (even with the constant undermining by the Board)...because no other program is run by board that is essentially only favorable to a different school. The financial thing is just a disguise.

This crap always pops up when UAB has ANYTHING positive happen in football. I've never seen so many news stories about a school being threatened to lose football by another school. Imagine if UT tried to shut down the Memphis athletic program every year by denying you the right to build anything, blocking coaching hires, threatening to kill the program (destroys recruiting), etc. It's just insane. Lol. Time to drink.

Actually UTK started that approach (to limit Memphis funding) years ago by pushing the formation of TBOR where Memphis was grouped with every other school in the state for funding. It's just another way to not have to compete with Memphis and other state colleges & universities for funding. Practically not a lot of difference from a funding prospective from what UA does, just a little more discreet. UTK gets their funding & everyone else is left to compete for the scraps. Under TBOR our university competes for state funding with:

Austin Peay
East TN
Middle TN
TN St
TN Tech, and all the community colleges:
Chattanooga St
Cleveland St
Columbia St
Jackson St
Motlow College
Nashville St
NE St
Pellissippi St
Roane
SW St
Volunteer St
Walters St
TN College of Tech - did I leave any out?

Just another reason why Memphis should have their own board of regents. Looked at the TBOR website & found this, "The TBR system includes six universities, 13 community colleges and 27 colleges of applied technology...", so even more to compete with for funding.

Interesting play on words. Note also that the first 4 letters of "bUTchug" are "Butch".

They were moving from D2 to D1 and decided to kill football and wrestling to keep their hockey program. They actually killed the wrestling program on the same day they won the national title.

Thanks...I think the spin then was that Lincoln did not want a second D1 program in the state...but there may have been more to it.

RE: UAB dropping football?
Alerbammer is not threatened by UAB football. There have been times in the past when, yes, they might have suffered an embarrassing loss to UAB had they played, but for the last 12-15 years at least, they have had no concerns.

Nebraska is not threatened by Neb-Omaha. TN is not threatened by Memphis football.

All those schools are so far entrenched in the upper echelon, they only have to worry about each other. They are the flagship schools of their states, so yes, they are going to get the lion's share of funding.

The spin from one side is that the Omaha AD was a former husker player. But it wasn't in your face like this UAB thing.

For as bad as we think we have it due to UcheaT, it pales in comparison to the way uab gets bent over by by the UA-controlled trustees in the state.

Not much difference really, our getting screwed just happens at the legislature level, then again by the TBOR rather than by a board appointed by the legislature.

I've got relatives that live in Birmingham. Mention UAB football to them and they just laugh. What's sad for the few UAB fans is, the majority of people in Birmingham couldn't give 2 sh!tz about UAB football. Whether they win or lose, it just doesn't matter. Gonna be interesting to see how this unfolds.

RE: UAB dropping football?
I just called an insider in Birmingham, he is very connected to the media and govt in the area. He has tickets to everything, minor league baseball, high school football, he goes to everthing in Birmingham, has a bunch of connections at UAB ,I asked him about this and he said:

" I thought they dropped football a few years ago "

He checked with his sources and said that he cannot find out if UAB has a football team or not..
