They did that with Akron too. Maybe it's a strategy!

Our entire offense is hurt, we cant afford to have NIU injure our entire defense next week

So as MAC fans without a horse in this race, is this game hard to watch? It maybe my own bias from expectations, but its been a boring garbage game to me.

I don't know. I'm watching Ohio take it to Buffalo!

Hard to argue with you. Neither team sharp. Blah.

Lucky for Americans the Toledo game wasnt on espn2. Lots of turnovers and 14 total penalties was brutal in the rain in front of 1000 fans

Agree. They seem to do that whenever the opposing offense is moving the ball too well.

ESPNU showed full shots of their 'away' side and end zone seating. You could count on two hands the number of people in both those stands. If I were a betting man, I wouldn't bet that even 1,000 fans were there. You can't include the band.
Seeing the Ball St. and OU crowds tonight (and also Akron's last night), how detrimental is this to the state of the MAC? You could take all the fans from all 4 of these games, put them in 1 stadium, and still not even come close to full capacity.

I am pretty sure the NIU Toledo game will be a big crowd next week too.

playing mid week games in November is detrimental to the MAC the way winning the lottery is detrimental to a life of poverty. We have nearly 10 years of data on mid week games to show that the drop off in attendance is negligible and the good far outweigh the bad. In fact, the teams that tend to play the most MACtion games tend to have the highest attendance. This is due to a teams' overall record having a bigger impact on fan turnout then playing a couple of games on a day other than Saturday.
Look at the games this past Saturday, the number of butts in seats was no better than the games during the week. We're losing 5k-10K fans in the stands and gaining how many eyeballs on the broadcasts? The average viewer doesn't care about fans in the stands, they know the deal- MACtion games are played in cold, wet weather on weeknights in mostly remote, rural communities, expectations are not high.

It seemed to me there were more non-fans (Players, coaches, band, other personnel, etc.) than fans in seats

Assuming the Rockets have to go with their 3rd string QB and after seeing him last night, don't be surprised if that happens.

We ran a vanilla offense throwing him in. MJ has gotten tons of reps in practice. His arm strength and speed is just as good or better than our other qbs. But he in the process of learning his checkdowns and learning when to scramble or throw it away. Very raw tallent, but i like MJ after a week of going through the playbook as he knows he is the starter. If our running game is going... It always is... He might not have to do much but keep from turning it over. NIU wont score over 40. They scored 35 with Lynch.

the MAC has traded it's local audience for a remote national one paid for by advertising. historically, the mac has had decent core fan bases for major sports. with the trend to midweek games there has been a steady decline in overall attendance (on all dates). the routine of planning your saturday around the hometown team (good or bad) has broken down.
true, the espn games help with recruiting and the mac level of play has not deteriorated. however, taking away the stretch run games that decide championships and rivalries from the local fans put short term exposure ahead of long term stability. on a tuesday evening there is going to be little to no tailgating, pep rallies, alumni events, student pre-game parties, etc... fans with kids are not likely to keep em out at the game till 11 on a school night. fans who live in neighboring towns and don't mind a 45 minute drive to a saturday afternoon game aren't making that trip on a Wednesday night. people who work early are not likely to go to the game. niu-toledo, toledo-bg on a saturday this yr would be big events, maybe sellouts. bet those stadiums are half full for the wednesday showdowns.
finally, the allure of midweek football has worn off. there are so many non-saturday games now that people pay much less attention than they used to. the ratings will be ok, because it's espn2 and there's always some viewers, but the excitement and interest has declined.
