I don't get this. I think maybe you're going on outdated information. They recently made the Honors program into a full independent college with its own dean.

The Honors College and the original UAB Honors Program are completely different things. They folded the Honors Program, which was far more robust and diverse, into the so-called "Honors College." The Honors Program used to be a national flagship program for collegiate honors. Watts has done nothing but work to diminish its worth since his arrival. He saw it as elitist and felt it wasn't worthwhile because it focused as much on arts and humanities as it did the sciences. He hates arts and humanities.
