Democrats Sink to Pre–Great Depression Levels in State Legislatures
http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/392...-john-fund

In addition to the GOP gains in the U.S., Senate, House and governorships it was an historic night for the party in state legislatures.

Here is the summary by Tim Storey of the National Conference of State Legislatures:

The Republican wave that swept over the states left Democrats at their weakest point in state legislatures since the 1920s.

Everything went in the direction of the GOP as Republicans seized new majorities in the West Virginia House, Nevada Assembly and Senate, New Hampshire House, Minnesota House and New York Senate, The West Virginia Senate is now tied.

Control of several legislative chambers was still up in the air early Wednesday as counting continued in several tight races that will determine control of the Colorado Senate, New Mexico House and Maine Senate.

The lone bright spot for Democrats was holding majorities in the Iowa Senate and Kentucky House.

The overall number of divided state governments will increase with changes in governor in places such as Massachussets, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Maryland along with the legislatures in West Virginia, Minnesota and New York.

UPDATE: Republicans have taken control of the Colorado senate and the New Mexico house. They also have a chance to win the Colorado house and the Washington house, after mail-in ballots are finally counted. The state legislative chambers now stand at 65 Republican, 23 Democrat, 1 tie, and 4 undecided.

Holy schit, read that list.

Quote:Republicans seized new majorities in the West Virginia House, Nevada Assembly and Senate, New Hampshire House, Minnesota House and New York Senate, The West Virginia Senate is now tied.

THIS has got to be the most important and under-reported part of the entire story. Minn and NY? Wow.

The New York state Senate has been gerrymandered in the GOP's favor for a long time -- just as the New York Assembly has been gerrymandered in the Democrats' favor. But even *with* the gerrymander, the NY GOP has been so hopelessly dysfunctional since the late-Pataki era, that they haven't been able to consistently hold the state Senate. But now maybe that will change. We'll see.

The GOP candidate for Governor -- Astorino -- got beat 54-41 by Cuomo but even that was a bit closer than what the polls indicated.

The problem with one party rule is that you still have 2 sides fighting. A liberal side and a more liberal side or a conservative side and a more conservative side. There really should be liberal and conservative republicans and democrats.

Not confirmed but I read on a pro-GOP site that as of January the Republicans will hold majorities in 70 of the 99 state legislative chambers in the U.S.

That's a deep bench to run people statewide. I'm sure that many of the democratic politicians are ethnics or niche politicians(super liberal). Doesn't leave many people to run for statewide office. You are just left with children of famous democrats like in GA & KY.

What happened here in West Virginia was incredible.

Here are the House and Senate makeups before the election yesterday.

House
Democrats 53
Republicans 47

Senate
Democrats 24
Republicans 10

Before the election, the talk was about could the Republicans pick up 4 seats needed to take control of the House. Nobody dared even dream that they might take the Senate where only 17 of the 34 seats were in play.

Republicans picked up 7 seats in the Senate in winning 11 of the 17 races! The picked up 17 seats in the House!

The post-election House and Senate now look like this:

House
Democrats 36
Republicans 64

Senate
Democrats 17
Republicans 17

If you're unfamiliar with West Virginia politics, this landslide is even greater than it sound. Democrats have controlled both house in the state legislature for 81 years!

The Speaker of the House, a 32 year incumbent, lost!

An 18 year old girl was elected to the House as a Republican in the first election she was old enough to vote!

All of this plus 38 year incumbent Nick Rahall lost his U.S. House of Representatives seat. After last night, all three U.S. Representatives from West Virginia are Republicans.

And finally, Shelley Moore Capito won the U.S. Senate seat held for the past 30 years by Jay Rockefeller.

I honestly thought none of this could ever happen in my lifetime.

State Senator Daniel Hall from Wyoming County announced he is switching. GOP will have 18-16 majority, pending other possible switches.
