For those not familiar with wresling lore, the Montreal Screwjob was a title match between Brett Hart and Shawn Micheals. Hart had not renewed his contract with the WWE and was headed to the defunct WCW. However, the original booking called for Hart to keep his title. During the match Michaels put Hart into a submission hold and Vince McMahon ran to the timekeeper and rang the bell that Hart had submitted, giving Michaels the title.

Would it really surprise anyone today if something liked this happened in CFB? I wouldn't be surprised to watch a game where a top team was on the ropes against an opponent and someone from the Playoff Committee/ESPN intervened in a game that altered the outcome.

In contrast, there's a much stronger argument for a "wisdom of crowds" approach to the college football top 4.

I don't think it's that different. The basketball committee, they might have it right when they get their teams (maybe missing a team or two), but they shoot themselves in the foot once it comes to seeding, which they do get some assistance from their network stakeholders, supposedly. It's definitely not clean or fair.

What will be interesting if things largely remain as they are now, will there be one of those "shocking" reveals where a school "comes out of nowhere" and gets into the field? THAT'S WWE-like. I get the feeling this committee can and will pull that stunt.
