Octavius Ellis scored 12 points with nine rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the University of Cincinnati’s men’s basketball team to an 86-79 exhibition victory over Bellarmine on Monday night at Fifth Third Arena.
Bellarmine, playing its exhibition opener, was led by Jake Thelen’s 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Rusty Troutman added 17 points and Josh Derksen 15 points.
The Bearcats, who trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, placed four players in double figures.
The game was played with a 30-second shot clock instead of the regulation 35-second clock on an experimental basis, as mandated by the American Athletic Conference.
With the score tied, 46-46 at halftime, UC started the second half on 12-4 run to take a 58-50 lead with 15:43 left behind six points from Ellis as the Bearcats' superior size and athleticism began to surface. The Bearcats extended that lead to 18. Bellarmine got no closer than 84-79 inside the final minute.
The Knights conclude their exhibition season Sunday against Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center in a 12:30 p.m. game. Bellarmine opens its regular season Nov. 14 at Northwood (Mich.).
