Octavius Ellis scored 12 points with nine rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the University of Cincinnati to an 86-79 exhibition victory over Division II Bellarmine on Monday night at Fifth Third Arena.

The Bearcats, who trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, placed four players in double figures. Eleven of the 12 UC players who saw action scored. UC made 17 of 22 from the free throw line.

UC's starters were Ellis, Gary Clark, Shaq Thomas, Troy Caupain and Ge'Lawn Guyn. The game was played with a 30-second shot clock instead of the regulation 35-second clock on an experimental basis, as mandated by the American Athletic Conference.

Redshirt freshman Deshaun Morman scored 11 points with two steals in a reserve role and senior Jermaine Sanders scored 11 while making three of four from long range and Caupain added 10.

With the score tied, 46-46 at halftime, UC started the second half on 12-4 run to take a 58-50 lead with 15:43 left behind six points from Ellis as the Bearcats' superior size and athleticism began to surface. The Bearcats took an 18-point lead, their largest of the night, on a 3-pointer by Sanders with 6:16 remaining.

The Knights, who were led by Jake Thelen's 21 points, came back to get within five with 59 seconds left.

UC, with seven newcomers, fell behind early against the crisp-passing, hot-shooting Knights, who made their first eight shots and didn't miss a field goal attempt until the 11:30 mark of the first half. Bellarmine led by seven with 8:24 left in the first half.

The Bearcats received a spark off the bench from Morman, who missed last season with a broken foot. Morman scored 11 points in the half in just six minutes, including a 3-pointer that banked in as the buzzer sounded to end the half.

Ten different UC players scored in the first half. The Bearcats made 11 of 12 free throws to stay in the game.

Octavius Ellis scored 12 points with nine rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the University of Cincinnati’s men’s basketball team to an 86-79 exhibition victory over Bellarmine on Monday night at Fifth Third Arena.

Bellarmine, playing its exhibition opener, was led by Jake Thelen’s 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Rusty Troutman added 17 points and Josh Derksen 15 points.

The Bearcats, who trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, placed four players in double figures.

The game was played with a 30-second shot clock instead of the regulation 35-second clock on an experimental basis, as mandated by the American Athletic Conference.

With the score tied, 46-46 at halftime, UC started the second half on 12-4 run to take a 58-50 lead with 15:43 left behind six points from Ellis as the Bearcats' superior size and athleticism began to surface. The Bearcats extended that lead to 18. Bellarmine got no closer than 84-79 inside the final minute.

The Knights conclude their exhibition season Sunday against Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center in a 12:30 p.m. game. Bellarmine opens its regular season Nov. 14 at Northwood (Mich.).

Per Mick Cronin....Bellarmine led the planet in FG% offense 3 of the last 5 years.

Per Mick Cronin....Bellarmine's head coach is the best offensive coach in the country.

That begs the obvious question, why is he still coaching Bellarmine. And more importantly, why hasn't Mick hired him as his Associate Head Coach.

Great questions.

If Mick is pleased with his assistant coach (and he is) why should Mick try to hire a head coach at another school to come to UC and kowtow to Mick?

And perhaps he likes coaching at Bellarmine.

Sometimes coaches stay at smaller schools because of quality of life issues.

Mick is very happy with his current staff. I wouldn't expect to see any changes unless Savino gets a head coaching gig somewhere.

I'm surprised he is still at Bellarmine. He really has turned them into a D2 powerhouse. Maybe he is looking for the right job to come up and doesn't want to take on a bad mid-major, who knows. I've been impressed with them every year and I thought they had won against a couple D1 schools in the past.

And one of those D1 schools was Xavier. 02-13-banana

Scotty coached high school ball in Louisville for a long time before joining Denny Crum's staff as an assistant coach. He stayed on at Louisville with Pitino while he and Mick were both assistants there. Bellarmine gave him a shot when they were pretty down and he has been extremely happy. BU won the D2 National Championship in I believe 2012. This was in addition to one or two more D2 Final Fours.

They did a minor renovation of Knights Hall a few years ago which made satisfied him. I know Ball State reached out to Scotty last year but ended up getting a raise at BU. I think being in Louisville so long he is comfortable where he is at. I think age probably plays a factor in why more D1 schools haven't tried to snag him.
