The problem I have with a statement like this is that it still comes across as being disingenuous and kind of a back-handed compliment.
Why was last year a "debacle"? Because we were 1-11? Is that really all that can be taken away from Fleck's first year here? It shouldn't be...
If you really listened to what Fleck said, he was pretty consistent in saying that year one's goals were to lay a strong foundation for sustained long-term success. IMO, last season should still be recognized and appreciated for what it was. We wouldn't be in the position that we're in right now if he hadn't stuck to his guns on certain things and stayed the course.

Last year was tougher because of what we thought we were seeing at MSU.
We recruited and played another MAC FOTY. He is a stud. ZT came into MSU and threw a TD on his first ever pass!!
Things got a little rough after that.
