RE: Other games, 11/1
Right now, it's a three team race for that one major bowl slot, among Marshall, Colorado State and Boise State. East Carolina is likely out, and no one from the Sun Belt or MAC is remotely close.

With respect to Colorado State and Boise State, the Rams are 7-1, but that one loss was to Boise State, which is 6-2. Should Boise State run the table (including winning the MW championship), they will be 11-2, versus a possible 13-0 Marshall. In spite of Marshall's weak schedule, I cannot see the "committee" jumping a 2-loss G5 team over an undefeated one. However, if Boise State were to lose, and Colorado State win out (thus winning their division of the WAC and winning the championship game), a 12-1 CSU team would likely get the nod over the Herd.

Let's just hope Rice makes this scenario moot.

I feel for that Ole Miss WR. What a gruesome injury; hope he has as smooth of a recovery as possible.

It's too bad that Georgia Southern is not bowl eligible (2nd year of FCS to FBS transition), because clearly they are the class of the Sun Belt Conference.

What does it say about the Sun Belt that in their second year of transition from FCS they are the class of the conference?

Yup. And you hate to see a game decided by an injury--I'm pretty sure the fumble was the result of the broken ankle/leg instead of a strip by the defender. But it was a clean play, just unlucky for Treadwell and Ole Miss.

Suppose Rice had beaten ODU and were to run the table. That would mean betting Marshall twice, obviously. 11-2 Rice with only season-opening losses to national championship contender ND and SEC bowl-eligible aTm would be at absolute worst a legitimate contender for the slot.

RE: Other games, 11/1
I don't see that as a realistic assessment of this year's team though Chip. We're playing well at times, and some guys have improved quite a bit from last year to this year, but in general, I think last year's team was more talented than this year's team. Which is why all the grumbling after every win amuses and frustrates me so much. I'm impressed with how little of a drop-off we actually have had - based on how many talented seniors we lost last year.

Maybe it's a possibility next year if we can somehow beat Texas and Baylor on the road. I could see us giving Texas a game depending on how much they improve from this year to next year. Right now, I don't think we'll be close to Baylor. But I could see us being a little better next year than this year, if we get a few guys to step on the OL and back 7 on defense. But we'll need to stay healthy - which is always the big dilemma. Getting Covington back for his senior year will be huge too to the team's success.

What does it say about the Sun Belt that in their second year of transition from FCS they are the class of the conference?

In my rating system, 4 of the bottom 6 in FBS are from the Sun Belt:

123. New Mexico State (2-7)
124. Idaho (1-7)

125. Kent State (1-7)
126. Eastern Michigan (2-7)
127. Georgia State (1-8)
128. Troy (1-8)

The Sun Belt is 11-27 in non-conference games this season.

In this scenario, assuming Marshall wins their other games, the CUSA championship game is at Marshall, if La Tech wins, but at Rice if Rice wins out, as Rice would have the head to head tiebreaker.

LaTech is currently 5-0 in conference. If Rice beats Marshall but loses to LaTech, how would the championship game not have Marshall travel to Ruston?
