I wish they still played the Gladiator song. They did for a couple years a few years back. It was amazing.

UCF: 305
ECU: ~250
UCONN: 300+
Tulane: Just over 90
Houston: 350
USF: 330
SMU: 90-100
Just a sample of numbers from the other bands in our conference. As you can see, we are not the largest (And not even close to being the smallest).
But our band is not 'Tiny' By any means.
I call bull.
Can you inform us on the deal with the same tired ass music as well?
Music is not free. If you want the band to play something different, offer to purchase the band the rights to receive the sheet music. The same tired ass music is a direct result of the same tired ass donations.
Hard to believe we pay for that lame ass 'im so glad'. UT song.
I may just offer to purchase the band the rights to receive the sheet music to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, so I can see the band play the entire 17 minute song.
Very interesting and I will donate for that.

RE: Our band is tiny
Thank you, BuccTiger for the post.
The lack of a "pit" traces back to more than money in our case. I suspect it also traces back to facilities.
Some of you band parents ask your kids where the bandroom is and where the practice field is. If it is like it used to be, they are halfway across the main campus from each other.
Unless it has changed, there is no storage for the band over by the practice field either. That means anything used in the show has to be carted halfway across campus for every practice. Over time, less and less stuff gets used that isn't a carried instrument. It's just not worth the trouble.

This is the long and short of it.
I like our band the size it is. We do have a more talented band and a more sophisticated drill than MTSU, even though they are bigger than us. You add more people IF they can play and march. No scraps.

We can even change their name to the Mighty Sound of Iron. I always thought mighty sound of the south was too regional anyway.

MSOS alum '02-'05
I got 2/3 tuition scholarship as a non-music major when I started, and dropped to 1/2 tuition for non-music majors when I left. After 3 years in school, my engineering study requirements rose along with my MSOS commitments and I had to pick. Along with reduced scholly, MSOS started requiring lessons.... An additional class that wasn't engineering. They picked quality over quantity. Tough to get both.
Also, mic the dang band!!! And quit playing crappy music over them.

is that tower at the practice field for the band? if so, at least the band now has a tower to observe from above the practice field instead of climbing atop The Roane roof.

In days of yore, when I first was in the band, we had solid black uniforms with white overlays with RED graphics and that "goofy" tiger logo on the back. Then we got new unis w/ blue coats and white pants. The blue was closer to the current blue than the darker blue the teams were wearing. They did, however, still have red graphics. By the way, the football team wore the darker blue BUT they had RED stripes on their helmets and on their shoulder (UCLA) stripes.
The band recently had white pants but Shirley Raines thought that black pants would look sharper. Personally I don't think so but whatever, she was the boss.
As far as tradition goes, I find nothing at all wrong with tradition;however, if you saw the Pittsburgh Steelers bumblebee uniforms, I am sure you are glad they didn't "stick" with them thru the years. I think MOST of the "music" today really sucks but I have my vinyl, cds and mp3 player so I don't have to listen to that crap. They are still not playing the fight song the way it was written by my band director, Dr. Tommy Ferguson. That's my only *****, right now any way.

He don't get that we've never had any tradition with colors. Spook wanted us to be like Ole Miss, hence the dark blue and red. We've changed our damn name like 6 or 7 times. IMO our tradition IS in the changes.

Well, I can say this, our band is awesome.
We're funky. I love that. 500 piece bands playing college crap from 1960 does nothing for me, or the students, or the players.
