What is Roku? And do we have to pay/sign up for anything?

It is a streaming box you connect to your TV. You get a bunch of free channels and you can link in Netflix, Amazon Prime, ESPN and others. I use it more than my cable box. I think it was $90, can't remember. No monthly charge.

Roku is awesome.

http://www.amazon.com/Roku-3-Streaming-M...B00BGGDVOO

That's the one I have. It streams really, really fast, even wirelessly. I have DSL but I can still stream wirelessly across the house from my router and it never lags. You have to pay for typical stuff: Netflix, Amazon, etc. but a lot of channels are free. It's by far the best way to stream. Worth every penny for the speed and reliability.

RE: Roku AAC
<---- Professional Nerd

I wouldn't recommend them. I've been piping internet to my TV's since around 2001, when you'd have to use VGA or DVI, and hack a working resolution in software. Since then I've had or used dozens of methods to get content to the living room.

Roku I used in a bed and breakfast type rental place. The interface was extremely slow, hard to search, and very limited. You can play roku's channels and that's it.

The best solution by far is a dedicated, small home theatre PC, with a slick front end like XBMC (or Plex for mac people). If you don't have the tech skills or budget for that setup, you can buy dedicated XBMCboxes the size of a modem on amazon for $100. With XBMC you can cast web content or youtube videos from you iphone or android device, use your phone/tablet as the remote control and media browser, and stream play any content stored on your home computers. Xbmc.org

You could also opt for the Plug and play, low cost, easy to use streamers Chromecast, AppleTV, and Amazon's Fire TV dongle.

Lowest lift, you could always use a video out cable with your laptop when you need to.

I don't think this digital network channel shows games. I think this roku channel just acts as a GUI front end for this website

http://www.theamerican.org/watch/?Archive=714

If you are going to buy a walled garden streaming device, at least make sure that it has watchespn access (the devices/methods I recommended earlier all do)

I travel a lot (cruises, Hawaii, etc) and this seems too good to be true. But I am more than willing to learn. Can I somehow do this? Do I have to leave my TV on when I go away? Does this really work and I can get the AAC channel and watch all this stuff while in Waikiki?

You can take the Roku thing with you on trips. Need to be connected to an ISP.

Again, you're not going to catch bearcat games using the roku, or from this American Digital site in a browser. The only way you're getting Bearcats games to your TV is by the following:

* Game is on one of the ESPN's, and you have some device with a watchespn app, widget, channel (which can be blacked out if you are in the wrong part of the country, can be overcome using a VPN network)

* Game is on CBS Sport Network, and you have ISP/Paid access to their web streaming service/app

* Game is on TV and you have a Slingbox, this is the "my tv at home has to be on (controllable) method, and I don't personally find it very effective

* You can get a web browser on your TV, and don't mind visting the first row/VIP league, kinda grey-area websites.

If you buy a roku box, don't expect bearcat games on anything other than through the watchespn app, which could even then be blacked out. If you want one for Hulu, Netflix, HBO or other streaming use, they work, I suppose. There are just better, cheaper, even more portable options.

I almost made the switch to Roku this year, but after some research figured Direct TV was my best option at getting Bearcat athletics (for the price).

RE: Roku AAC
Sorry EffinBJ, but I didn't understand half of what you posted. That's not on you; but I come from a world of slide rules, rotary dial phones, and a remote was a place very far away.

For this technically challenged guy, the Roku was my favorite Christmas present to myself last year. It turned my plasma (see) flat screen into a wireless device. Finally got to watch Netflix and caught up on "24" and watched the entire production of "Mad Men". I've watched numerous sports programs, including UC live sports (mostly hoops) on WatchESPN. I also pay each year for the MLB package for my other devices, and the Roku allowed me to watch my Pirates season on tv. Have also been able to go back and watch cable TV shows that I forgot to DVR and that TWC does not offer.

Thanks for posting about the American Channel. I will go add it now.

Edit: Easy to find under "New Channels" - watching media day for basketball now.

For the most part, ROKU replaced my dvd player (which was the device I used for streaming netflix, Amazon prime, etc). Their format/software whatever you call it is light years better than my dvd player format. Same for cable/satellite guide format, so I watch ESPN via Roku.

If you stream you gotta use something.

No offense meant and none taken. And I'm glad that you're enjoying the Roku - I just didn't want anyone thinking that this Roku channel was going to get them Bearcat games, because it won't. But that channel does have AAC highlights and pressers, specifically the same ones in the link I posted earlier. A lot of the "channels" on these type boxes are really front ends for a video-centric website - youtube, PBS.org, CNN Video, etc.

I believe that is accurate.

Same as Amazon Fire TV and Google Chromecast. They effectively turn a normal TV into a Smart TV.

The main difference between them is what "channels" they give you access to. I put it in quotes because they are basically apps for different networks. I have Apple TV and they seem to add new networks every couple of months. Right now I have Watch ESPN, HBOGo, Showtime on Demand, FX onDemand, ABC on Demand, History channel, Fox, CNBC, A&E Disney. In addition there are plenty of other apps like Netfliz, Hulu, MLBTV, Youtube, and about 30 others that I'vd never opened up. This really is the future of television if we can get fiber optic cable everywhere.

The caveat is that you have to have a cable/ dish login to be able to access the different networks.

There was some big news last week in that HBO started offering streaming service completely separate from any cable or dish service.

They and other conferences won't how games this way for awhile though. These types of deals are not the same things as SEC or BTN. The streaming sites will only show conference related stuff or maybe show old games.
