If podunk Louisa County can get a live lion at games, why can't we?

http://www.nbc12.com/story/27170952/live...anger-peta

Plus any chance to piss off PETA is a win in my book.

RE: Mascot
I guess Peta will be after these guys next: They started like this:

http://www.unalionsden.com/archive/galle...to_id=6550

Now they are like this:

http://www.unalionsden.com/archive/galle...to_id=6589

They are University of Alabama's lions Leo and UNA. They are a big part of the school.

RE: Mascot
So Lions have been added to the list of endangered animals yet you think it would be just swell to capture one and bring to Foreman Field for your three hours of enjoyment?

I think it is swell to give lions a protected environment where they can breed and not have to get all cut up and beat up by their natural environment.

Putting politics, science, etc. aside for a moment IMO things such as live lions, cannons, and even further upgrades to Foreman Field should be postponed until after there is a plan and a funding source for our new stadium. Afterall, if you know you're going to be buying a new house soon it's not the right time to be shopping for new furniture and pets.

We have Charles. Seems like he is a fairly unique mascot as far as "Lion" schools go...

Ralphie the Buffalo is one of the great mascots. Not sure a lion could be used the same way, though.

RE: Mascot
Too much red tape bringing in a live animal, especially an endangered one. I think we need to worry about building a solid atmosphere sans-gimmicks for the time being.

Guess we have some PETA fans here......
I don't see any problem with borrowing a real live lion from a zoo (you know, one of those places where they preserve the lives of endangered species and stuff), and having a small area for him to visit 6 times a year and be appreciated by football fans, and hey, maybe stick a bucket out for gameday visitors to drop a couple bucks into to help fund the further preservation of endangered species.

Why would we need to hunt down and capture one? We have a freaking zoo right down the street with guess what - a lion! I'm sure they could use a few more bucks.

Mike the Tiger at LSU lives like a freaking king - http://www1.vetmed.lsu.edu/SVM/AboutSVM/...71993.html - and guess what - ENDANGERED

And Charles is cool and all, but not quite as intimidating as a lion.

The drama some of you add to simple discussions is amazing.

Not taking sides on this issue, but it is probably a lot more complicated than it sounds. For instance the Virginia Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Zoos work hard to achieve this accreditation and will not do anything to jeopardize it. I'm not sure if loaning out a lion to ODU for their home games is something that the VA. ZOO would be willing to risk.

No, Stanger DOES NOT make a good point. You need to step off the live lion thing. Starting from the fact that it is just wrong to subject the lion to that type of environment and moving on to the fact that it is not as simple as walking down to the Zoo to "borrow" one. These are extremely dangerous animals, regardless of how they are raised. You just need to trust that I know far more about this than any of you. Let it go. Bad idea.

And I believe their founder is ODU Alum (and apparently sports fans on message boards)

Is a lion more dangerous than a Bengal Tiger? I'm sure 'borrowing' would involve the assistance of zoo personnel and handlers. And, like Mike the Tiger, would be purely optional for the tiger. Anyone that would assume (or assume that another poster thought) that one could just walk into the zoo and put a leash on the thing and walk out is, well, I'll just stop there.

Lucky, I was just spitballing. Sorry to cross over into your area of expertise. I still and always will think it would be cool. And it's a topic thats been discussed here before and I don't remember all the negativity. Probably wouldn't be a good mix with the howitzer. Or is a howitzer a bad idea, too?

Think I'll go protest a circus now.

I would have to disagree with this. I spent some time with UNA and Leo the lions at the University of North Alabama and had the opportunity to tour their habitat walk around and see them up close in between the split double fensed home. These animal are extremely healthy. Taking care of these animals on this level raises peoples awareness of them. It impressed me. Im an animal lover and it was an experience of a lifetime.
