UC Requesting Quotes on $70M Fifth Third Arena Renovation
@buildingcincy:
OFCC issues RFQ for design/architecture services for $70M renovation/redesign of Fifth-Third Area/Shoemaker Center: http://ofcc.ohio.gov/Portals/0/Documents...15074A.pdf
6:43 PM - 30 Oct 2014

Quote: As student, fan and alumni expectations have changed, the need for fewer, but better seating options has driven the University’s decision to evaluate possible renovation options for the interior and exterior of this structure. As the buildings major systems near their expected end of service life, the approach will be all-encompassing upgrades to not only the fan seating options, but also to toilet rooms, HVAC, lighting, A/V and fire protection systems, roofs, concessions, suites and specialty club spaces and improvements to basic circulation. Dated exteriors and stairwells, as well as inadequate concourses will be renovated in addition to the main seating bowl. The court will not be re-oriented, as
preliminary studies have ruled this option out at this time

Looks like UC is throwing a bone out there and think they can get it done for about 70M or so.

Great news for the program. $70 more million invested in facilities. WLW reports it will take 2 years. So it looks like we'll get a couple years downtown I assume

RE: UC Requesting Quotes on $70M Fifth Third Arena Renovation
Bumping this post from earlier this year. Michigan did their construction over 2 years in 2 phases during the offseason and never missed a home game.

(04-03-2014 03:18 PM)SeniorBearcat Wrote:  Michigan did the construction on Crisler Arena in 2 phases totaling 72M. The 1st phase on Crisler Arena cost $20 million dollars and addressed the highest priority infrastructure needs - roof, electrical, plumbing, air systems, sound and lighting etc. This 1st phase was done in the offseason. The second phase cost $52 million dollars (also done in the next offseason) and added new fan entrances, additional retail, tickets spaces, private club spaces, improved seating for people with disabilities, renovated concourses and replaced all seats in the arena. I believe any redo of the Shoe would require 2 phases as well.

Toledo did the construction on Savage Arena in 1 phase totaling 30M.

Below is a post I made in this thread from 2 years ago with regards to basketball arena upgrades.

(11-30-2012 10:53 AM)SeniorBearcat Wrote:  I don’t know if I buy the estimates…I’ll look at the other 2 schools I have had family members graduate from (Michigan and Toledo)… both have recently renovated their BB arenas. Michigan cost $52 million and Toledo cost $30 million…both BB arenas look like new.

Michigan

Reduced seating from 13,751 to 12,721, added 63,000 square feet for new fan entrances and private club seating.

“The University of Michigan Regents approved the schematic designs of the $52 million makeover to Crisler Arena. The overhaul will include new fan entrances, additional retail and ticketing spaces as well as a private club space.” - May 19th 2011

http://www.umhoops.com/2011/05/19/regent...-makeover/

Toledo

Reduced seating from 9,000 to 7,300…

“On July 17, 2006, a gift of $5 million, the largest single gift ever made to the UT athletic department, was donated and earmarked for use on the new Savage Hall update project. These funds were used along with those obtained in a capital raising campaign in order to make major repairs and upgrades to the facility, including an all new athletic center. Final plans included new locker rooms, weight rooms, a pro shop, a Rocket Hall-of-Fame, new ticket offices and a professional office area, as well as revamping of the main arena area which modernized every aspect of the Savage Hall experience. The complex was also renamed Savage Arena. The renovations, which totaled $30 million, were completed in time for the 2008-09 basketball season.” – December 2, 2008

Here is a post from BearcatMan in this thread talking about renovating the Shoe.
(02-07-2014 11:30 PM)BearcatMan Wrote:  I say again, as I have said many times in the past when 5/3rd renovations/improvements have been brought up, please look at what Toledo did with their Savage Hall renovation. The old Savage was a smaller version of 5/3rd with the exact same court layout, square concourse paths, seating arrangements, and even the UCATs Club Lounge. What they have done to that arena has made it an incredible place to watch a game.

There aren't many pictures remaining of the old setup, but here's one I could find during construction that kind of shows the old layout, complete with collapsible stands on all sides like the Shoe.

And here is the new seating layout.

They completely cut off one of the top sections to add a couple levels of premium boxes, but the other upper level remains (which is the side this photo is taken from). Capacity went from roughly 11,000 to a little over 9,000, but their upper decks were not as high as ours at all. I think with a similar layout including seating in the round in the lower area, we could probably get to around 11,000. They also added 12 new premium boxes that were all leased out prior to the completion of the project to go along with the boxes at concourse level of the reverse side (mush like our own current suite setup).

From the article:

"The court will not be re-oriented, as preliminary studies have ruled this option out at this time"

So I guess the rumor of rotating the court 90 degrees has been ruled out.

Rotating the floor only works if the armory is demolished and a new entrance is added in that space with a small courtyard. In turn the [/i]armory can't be demolished when the shoe no longer is multi use.

Inspector Hound, thank you for "sniffing" that one out.

Guys, this is going to be exciting. Fun times at UC. I absolutely love my job and have bought in 100% to this place. Even started a payroll deduction to donate to UCATS.

I know it is a bit off topic but the way people here have gone out of their way to welcome my wife and I has been great. She is from the Pac NW and always said she wanted me to get back there as a long term goal but has now done a 180. Told me the other day she would be perfectly happy staying here just because of how everyone has treated us.

The good news is this still leaves open the possibility of rotating the floor 180 degrees....or even 360!
