Rice vs FIU prediction thread
The Owls go to unfamiliar territory on Saturday playing the Florida International Panthers. The first time we have played them in football. FIU is 3-5, having lost to Bethune-Cookman (!), Pitt, Louisville, UTSA and Marshall. They have beaten Wagner, UAB and Florida Atlantic. Last year I think they were 1-11.

Gleaning from a couple of sites (thanks to ricefootball.net), it looks like they have a pretty good defense..allowing only 23 ppg and leading the nation in fumble recoveries. They are also 7th in the nation in turnover margin (+1.25).

They have a good Freshman QB, McGough, who has passed for over 1,700 yards, 12 TD's and 10 INT's.
Their TE, Jonum Smith has 42 receptions this year for 485 yards and 4 TD's. Sounds like they have a Phillip Gaines-type CB in Richard Leonard. He leads the nation in take aways and has 4 INTs this year.

Since we've never played them..and haven't played anybody this year that they have played, it's a bit hard to get a read on FIU. They lead Marshall at the half..and then got flattened in the 2nd. They played Pitt a fairly good game, but barely squeaked by UTSA. Last time I looked at the line we were favored by 6.

We can't afford to let this one get away. This and next Saturday's Homecoming game against UTSA are must wins before the road trip to WV.

Rice wins a tough one 24-17.

I don't think of you as being particularly optimistic with your past score predictions, does this prediction more reflect your thoughts on FIU, or Rice?

RE: Rice vs FIU prediction thread
Only 3 teams have scored more than 20 points on FIU this season: Pitt (42), Marshall (45) and Louisville (35). They lost two games in which they gave up 16 or fewer points: Bethune-Cookman (14) and UTSA (16). And they have a QB who can throw.

Consequently, I think our offense will struggle a bit more than usual, and I fully expect FIU to complete a couple long pass plays.

Rice: 27
FIU: 20

And Owl at the Moon - I don't think your equations are quite right, guessing at what scores I think you're going for (has to be something divisible by 7, or we start getting decimals).

Well, I may have grouped wrong (been forever since I did that)... but I ended up needing the square root of 147, which I rounded to 12 for the purposes of scores.

Ah, never mind, I found my error

Which isn't even quite right, as he has -2 of FIUs score, and only adds 1 back on when combining. That's why I'm thinking something isn't quite right.

And the fact I'm using quite right too many times means something isn't quite right with me. Or something like that.
