He got hit on the ankle with a fastball, fracturing it. I think you're being a little unfair.

All I was saying is folks get more injuries as they get older. I mean look at Werth for the nats. Every year now- it's something.

RE: MLB 2014/15 Hot Stove Thread
going to one of our favorite debate topics-
Markakis vs Aoki

for the entire season, it's real close now...
Markakis .301/.370/.376 .747 OPS 108 OPS+ 1.5 br/1.3 fb WAR 108 wRC+
Aoki .294/.359/.389 .748 OPS 110 OPS+ 1.4/1.9 WAR 117 wRC+

but 2nd half paints a very different story
Markakis .315/.348/.423 .771 OPS 113 wRC+ 111 OPS+
Aoki .224/.283/.400 .683 OPS 94 wRC+ 85 OPS+

The question that I have is will the Giants even renew his option? It probably won't vest now(he would need another 167 PA's)/ He has a bad September and I don't think they would renew it.

to be fair to Aoki, first he got hit on the ankle (that bone that juts out) with a fastball costing him like 6 weeks. Then he comes back and before he can truly get comfortable he gets hit in the head and goes on the concussion DL. I don't entirely disagree that Markakis probably the better player, but I don't think it's a big difference.

It's a tough question because the Giants aren't as analytical about these things. They'd give a guy like that $5.5 million just because he's a known quantity. BTW, he's a god awful outfielder. Anyway, I think it's a likely they keep him for that reason and because there aren't many other options. As of now they have 3 OF spots locked up: Pence, Blanco and Pagan. So they need 2 more. Mac Williamson is the closest minor leaguer to being ready. He's a strong RH power bat at AAA who strikes out a lot. I suppose they could call him up to platoon. The next closest minor league outfielder with any skills is Hunter Cole at AA. He's kind of a matt duffy, under the radar guy, but I can't see him breaking camp with the team. So including Aoki and Williamson that's 5 outfielders and it's what I think they're going to do. But there's a lot of time between now and then and there are some interesting variables. If they don't sign one of the big free agent pitchers they might go after someone like Cespedes or Heyward. I don't think they have a ton of money to burn, but there will be a decent amount, so we'll see

I'd say a lot of do they pick up the option is how he performs in September. If he continues on the .224/94/85 "tear" he has been on, I think they probably feel like they can get something cheaper.

Also my point is, I'd rather be the Braves with a much more known quanity who is playing pretty well 2nd half of the season- and is almost 2 full years younger. I'm a whole lot more confidant in Markakis being like this next year(or even better) vs Aoki who is at the age where there is deterioration very normally.

Also have to start to keep in mind- Byrd is only 123 PA's away from his option vesting for the 2016 season at 8 million. He could easily get that.
