This is very good for the Mocs for many reasons. That program needs some success.

Mercer will be the new daddy of that conference before too long.

I really didn't find that interesting, rather depressing how far the SoCon has fallen.

Good for UTC and WCU.

Well, considering the comments left by some Furman and Citadel fans about us being malcontents, I consider the state of the Southern Conference poetic justice. We held up that conference for years, along with Wofford, and was told our departure wouldn't change its stature. I knew this outcome was coming but I view this as a short-term problem until Mercer and ETSU find their legs.

"In past years, when the SoCon was viewed as bigger and better, occupied by at least a team or two capable of winning a national championship, the importance of such a match-up on Nov. 1 would be for playoff seeding purposes only.

But this isn't one of those years. Longtime giants Appalachian State (three FCS national titles) and Georgia Southern (six national crowns) have both abandoned the league for supposedly greener pastures at the FBS level."

And yeas it is a sad time for the SoCon.
Just look at the bottom of the page and look at the teams that were in the SoCon at one point.

And of course he has to toss in the obligatory... "for supposedly greener pastures." We should have left for those greener pastures 32 year earlier.

That's the assertion that caught my eye. It is without a doubt that we've moved on to greener pastures.

yeah. that comment raised a brow. The fcs was fun for what it is, but let's face it, nobody outside of the socon cares about that game. I'm not saying anybody outside of the Sun Belt cares about our game tonight, but it will be on the espn network. I'll take that.

RE: SoCon article that may interest App State and GS fans
Here's how bad it's sunk .... the two teams in the running for league supremacy have a combined 22-35 record over the last three years, and combined haven't seen the I-AA playoffs a combined 61 years between them.

Now I was expecting it to go to a one-bid league, primarily due to their scheduling this year, but didn't think they'd fall off a cliff that fast. I'm not surprised at all about Wofford or Furman, but even with the coaching change at the Citadel they've been bad. Mercer will probably take Furman's place as the private school with the best long term chances to win, as they have really put in the necessary resources to win. They are in a good position to set their foundation in with a president and AD who 'gets it'. Whether or not that is perpetuated in the future remains to be seen but I like their chances.

I'm sure they'll be able to watch Georgia Southern when the Eagles make their bowl game this year. They do seem to miss you guys so much.

If Western beats Chatty, they will almost surely win the automatic bid for the SoCon. Then the winners of the SoCon autobid will have a loss to Presbyterian. Let that sink in.

But hey, maybe with the SoCon circling the drain and the new 24-team playoff format Liberty will finally be able to add a single playoff appearance to their Sun Belt resume.

Come on, Chief. I bet you did a little looking back your first year in FBS. Not wanting to go back to FCS but we (App State and GS) didn't get many well-wishers from the SoCon when we accepted the SBC invitation. It's nice to look back and see we made more of a contribution to the conference than the remaining schools were willing to admit.

LOL don't hate. Presbyterian is 5-3 with loses to NIU, NC State, and an undefeated deep playoff bound Coastal Carolina team. Presby might actually be decent (comparatively speaking) this season.

Weird day seeing UTC and WCU playing for the top spot in SOCON football. Mercer does not have that much of a challenge in becoming the SOCON's powerhouse over the next few years.

I was 6 years old when Arkansas State moved to FBS, I have no memory of it at all.

We had already left the Southland a five years earlier and were playing as an independent.
