And it's debatable whether a G5 will make the playoffs even then. The p5 want the G5 out of the major bowl picture completely.

Bingo that is why they needed a committee.
They needed to rid themselves of the TCU and Boise type programs. The first level Utah , Louisville , TCU were good enough to invite in . That is as an all around candidate so other sports and academics. The latter they just locked out and includes UCF, ECU type schools. They are lacking in something like basketball success or academics.

I think the 8 team format is P5 champs plus 3 at large with a conditional G5 slot similar to the non-AQ conditional spot in the BCS.
I think we'll eventually see this too. The G5 spot will always get seeded 8th and play the #1 seed and lose every time.

I get where you're coming from, but I wouldn't be so sure, didn't Boise reach the top 5 in BCS rankings a couple of times? Not saying they're seeded over any P5 champs, but 7th? Maybe even 6th?

Yep with the 8 team format we could have those 6 P5 champions I had mentioned before 04-cheers

Remind me what you're referring to?

Made a bonhead reference on a thread similar to this a while back about the 6 P5 champs, you proceeded to call me out on it.

I think it will be here sooner rather than later. Like others have said, all it takes is to tick off the power conferences with snubbed teams and the ball will be rolling.

I thnk we see at least six within five years, maybe even by the 2016 season if the outcry is loud enough, doubt anything changes for next season.

The current format will have a year or two of a honeymoon phase. So by year three I think there will be a serious push for expansion and by year five I think it will be expanded. Plus they will make so much money out of eight teams.

To me a bunch of teams from the same conference playing in the finals becomes just another regular game. I would rather see matchups of teams from different regions/conferences..otherwise they become a replay of regular season games I've already seen. what's so special about alabama-lsu a second time in the same season..mind numbing media hype aside.

Me too. That's why the major bowls will draw higher ratings than the 4-team playoff (maybe minus the championship game) will if the P/O committee has 2 or more participants from the same conference in my humble opinion.

I'd dearly LOVE to see 3 P5's from the same conference in that format 04-rock

Boise did have a run for a few years that got them ranked high, but it might take a few years before we see another team on the Boise calibur level. It would take a team going undefeated for a couple years and have to start off the season ranked based on reputation and then play a very tough OOC against all ranked or high RPI opponents to move up high enough to get invited to the playoff and not be the last seed. It was awesome that year when Boise, Utah, and TCU were all mid-majors at the time and all were in the top 25 and hoping for an at-large bid. This year, the only team that has a shot is East Carolina but their conference schedule will probably keep them out of it and might not even be enough to keep them in the top 25. And IMO, Marshall can go undefeated and not even be a blip on the radar. They can talk and talk and talk in the CUSA boards, but theres no one listening except for themselves.

I guess our best shot would be 3 undefeated P5 schools and 1 undefeated ECU type G5 school and all of the rest have 2 or more losses.

Hope you're talking hypothetical as ECU already has a loss.

At 13-0 Marshall will be "on the radar" and I'm not sure ECU makes it to the end at 11-1, they've looked very average the last two weeks and still have to play Temple, Cincy and UCF, all of whom are better than USF and UCONN(the two teams they just struggled against, UCF might be as good as South Carolina who beat ECU already.
