that was his response to a UM fan/alumnus who was complaining about some of his policies.

For those who can afford to go to a world-class institution that doesn't dabble in the highest level of athletics across Division 1, I'd advise them to do so.

Trust me, it will save you the frustration of knowing what your tax dollars and tuition help fund.

It's all about context. They don't show the rest of the e-mail chain, so it's possible that the guy had a gripe that is against what the AD believes the school stands for (such as a "win at all costs" attitude).

But a lot of the other e-mails in that link were downright childish. Combine that with the concussion scandal, the disastrous decision to fire RichRod, and the poor hire of Hoke, and I'd be shocked if he's still an AD next year.

Not only that but he delated his emails in an attempt to circumvent FOIA laws which is a violation of UM & state policies.

Same. It's bad form for Brandon to do this regardless, but I can't say "Enough is enough #3" should ever be sent to an AD from a fan. What could possibly need to be said directly to the AD that Enough is Enough #1 and Enough is Enough #2 didn't cover?

It is no different in dealing with entitled government employees, entitled church hierarchy, entitled corporate entities, or any number of middle class teenagers who have been spoiled, never spanked, never corrected, and who feel life and everyone it somehow owes them something.

Class entitlement as exhibited in the posts of those placed in the public's trust are merely symptoms of a growing rift in what is supposed to be a Republic. There is supposed to be a close relationship between those who govern and those who give them their consent to govern, between those who speak for a particular position and those who pay them to do so, between those who teach and those who accredit and pay them to do so. There is a mutual benefit when a CEO's company that provides services and goods which the public acclaims maintains open communications with his/her clients. When the office is disconnected from its palpable association with those it has been created to serve social bonds are severed and the associations upon which a Republic, a religion, a mission, and a business, is built dissolves.

The Michigan AD is just yet another example of an entitled person who has lost the understanding that his position is based upon public trust, and not upon his own ego. He should be fired. He is paid well enough to be polite to even the rude and stupid.

Why is Brandon responding to every one of these emails?

If the first email from Disgruntled Fan is titled "Enough Is Enough", Brandon should politely respond and then respond no more to that fan, even if he writes "Enough Is Enough" #s 2 through 99.

Good point. It's incredibly rude of a fan to send these sorts of e-mails to someone you barely know, particularly someone who has an incredible amount of demands on his time. You really deserve a response if you're going to be that rude to the man twice.

This AD is treating his e-mail account as if he's making faceless, deniable posts on csnbbs.com. Even most people who post on these boards would have responded more politely.

As a college student I once worked for local government entity that spent more time trying to figure out how to keep stuff secret than actually doing anything. Miserable place.

I worked for one state agency that typically over-responded to Freedom of Information requests. If we thought something seemed to be relevant and wasn't specifically sought we sent it as well. Admittedly in hopes that we could fully respond and not have to deal with follow-up requests when they realized they had been too specific in their request. At another agency we dumped nearly every piece of paper into a database that images of documents and corresponding text database of the contents and made it available on our web site. Slashed our FOI requests dramatically. When I had a letter to send the print system automatically captured the text and image and put it in the database (also slashed our paper use because printing stuff for personal reasons could accidentally send it to the database if you didn't know how to do it and if you did bypass the database one of the tech staff would follow up weekly to find out why a print job didn't go in. 04-cheers ). The HR department was the only one set up to not default to the database because the majority of their documents had to be confidential by law.

As one of my former bosses said, "If we are doing something we don't want the public to know about, we shouldn't be doing it in the first place."

Tax dollars? Most states it's illegal for tax money to go to athletics. Just say'n.

Sort of.

Most states don't require the athletic department to buy the land for their facilities, most of the time they are built on unused or repurposed land the school already owns.

Most states don't require the athletic department to pay normal upkeep on most or any of their facilities, especially facilities used for offices.

There are generally a number of positions on a campus that exist because of athletics that aren't charged to athletics.

Most states allow schools to add a fee to support athletics to the cost of attendance goes into the scholarships awarded.

States with an income tax forego collecting income tax on money donated to support athletics.

There just isn't likely to be any state supported school that doesn't have some tax dollars invested in athletics even if you discount the charitable donation element.

Brandon is a great AD for Michigan. Sure, he makes minor goofs once in a while, but everyone should get off the guy's back and let him do his job.

I am sure that Michigan will be in its rightful place if Brandon is just left to do his job at the best of his abilities for another 3-4 years.
