What about CONDI RICE. She's already on the board of Regions and have two country club memberships in Birmingham. And for the life of me I just can't figure why UAB haven't bestowed an Honorary Doctoral Degree on her. She can be a mighty powerful ally if UAB ever have to make a break from Tuscaloozer.

She's probably too busy deciding which teams should be in the College Football Playoff.

I agree. Condi Rice is a big football fan and sending some UAB love her way might get her involved then no telling what might happen such as additional heavy weights getting involved with UAB. Love the idea.

Perhaps by the time Dr. Watts has served his decade, Dr. Rice may be ready to come to UAB as president.

That would be something!

UAB will continue to have medical administrators as president as long as the hospital and the HSF fall under the president's umbrella.

If a decade from now, UAB is still just an appendix to the medical establishment's main stream, it will probably be the President's job to rearrange the deck chairs on a sinking UAB ship. That would mean that after over a half century of potential growth (1969 to 2025+), the school has not yet become a true undergraduate force in the UA system. It will mean remaining the "stepchild" of the "big boys" across campus.

I didn't say the undergraduate side would flounder because of a medical-side president. All I'm saying is that I don't see a search committee choosing a ME or Education PhD to oversee a billion-dollar medical program.

No ties I think just being from the city, but what if we could get a guy like Bobby Bowden on our side?

Some of the lists above are great supporters of UAB football !!

However like me they could get together with all my friends and we give half of our net worth to the foundation and UAB would not have a drop in the bucket towards our actual needs.

A fund raising needs the big dogs. The Stephens, the Drummonds and the presidents of Alabama power, the BCA, liberty national, Birmingham country club, regions bank etc. Even paid (for a percentage) professional organizers and fundraisers who may not care a lick for UAB. [/align]

Fund raising is like taxation in that if one really wants to raise serious amounts of money, you have to go to those who have the most of it. Always draining those who have the least (as Alabama has always done), raises some money but leaves the state strapped for cash every year so it has to constantly borrow to make ends meet.

Fund raising among those who have less gets less return on any effort. Those "big fish" such as the ones you listed get more return by "swimming in the bigger ponds" to the west and southeast of us, but you never know until you ask.

If Watts serves a decade, there won't be a UAB or UAB football left to save. It will the University of Alabama Medical and Sciences Institute.

If you don't think that's true, your head is up your ass.

I think one of the people on this board needs to be somebody who can commit Harbert family money.

If recent press is any indication of future earning capacity, Sam Hunt might be a candidate

As for retired athletes that might have a little money, Bryan Thomas might not be a bad choice.
