OT: Boosters pay off Saban's $3.1M home
Wow . . . as if there isn't already too much money with the P5 and especially with the $EC. Of course, it's illegal for a student athlete to accept a free meal even though this is okay.

Quote:Nick Saban may earn in the area of $7 million per year, but that doesn't stop the Alabama faithful from helping out their championship-winning coach whenever and however they can.

According to a report from AL.com, the Crimson Tide Foundation paid off Saban's $3.1 million home in January 2013 even though the organization was under no obligation to do so.

The Sabans, who bought the 8,759-square-foot home in 2007, continue living there with the foundation picking up the tab for property taxes each year.

I take it you don't spend that much time in bama land? It's par for the course for them to operate that way whether it ends up being legal or not

What blazerwkr said.

The numbers change with inflation, but the basic dynamic is absolutely typical. The status of a successful UAT football coach within Alabama is somewhat akin to the status of Louis XIV within France.

Well at least he has to claim it as income and pay taxes on it. That will show him.

Well, $14,000 exclusion so $3,086,000. If I remember correctly, the giver is responsible for paying the tax on this if they've given over like $5,500,000 in their lives or something. Gift income is excluded from taxable income, but if I was the IRS I would make the argument that this is not a gift.

Why do these top coaches even need the big money they make. House is paid for, car paid for. Think Satin could ever pay for a restaurant tab. What can they even spend money on?

Ya'll seem to forget what the fanbase/boosters are truly like - around here, he doesn't even have to worry about tp some fan will gladly wipe it for him or lick it clean. What's more the house probably isn't worth what they paid for it so he got a tidy profit there as well & it was probably structured in such a way that a tax write off happened

Yeah, us up here in VA really don't have an environment like Alabama or SEC football. As much as I enjoy rooting for ODU and following the team it will never be a part of my life like I read about with news articles like this. That seems like such a foreign concept. If I saw Wilder out the last thing on my mind would be to pick up a tab for him.

I see a small window into it with my family in Greer, SC. They moved my cousins 90th birthday party because it fell on the Clemson/USC game.

Virtually every in-season wedding I have ever heard about in SEC-land was scheduled for the bye-week of whichever team the families were closest to. That was true for my wedding, and I'm not even that into Georgia anymore.

Not in Alabama. Never underestimate how backwards thinking SOME of those folks are. They've got real issues but at the end of the day it's their money and they can spend it how they like.

Everyone will eventually have his date with Destiny, be judged, and move on to the next life. But the Hands of Fate are cruel to those who have not lived right. They will be condemned to live this new life in a landscape of arid scrub. Some believe Mexico to be Hell, and if so it is true that this place was once Hell itself.
