I know we have FIU next, but the game time has been set for the homecoming game.

Agree, not great for homecoming.

ESPN and ESPN2 games get millions in viewership. Last year, the Fox Sports/CBS College Sport viewerships were in the 100,00-200,000 range.

I do not see the benefit in hurting the local fan base (student and regular fan base) repeatedly for marginal TV viewership. Is it really worth it? At least the AAC games are on ESPNU and ESPNews, which will attract fans flipping between ESPN and ESPN2.

Do people really do that? My cable channels don't have ESPNU or ESPNews very close to ESPN and ESPN2. In fact FSS is closer.

If we're selling out for TV and ignoring the fans, Rice/CUSA should go the weekday route on ESPN/ESPN2 than a Saturday ESPNU/FS1/American:

Tuesday Oct 14: ArkState/ULL 456,000 viewers on ESPN2

vs.

Saturday 11am start: Tulane/UCF 109,000; USF/Tulsa 84,000, Tulsa/Temple 77,000, SMU/ECU 147,000, Tulane/Rutgers 107,000

LA Tech turned down an 11am start for their homecoming. Upsets the networks but it's not like we're rolling in tv money anyway.

Getting tougher and tougher to nail down that coveted 2:30 PM spot on public access TV these days...

Also, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't being broadcast on TV mean that OwlVision no longer has the broadcast rights for any of the games? I haven't been seeing any links on the sidebar of the riceowls.com Schedule page, but not sure if that's an incorrect assumption.

I suspect there's no Owlvision. There usually isn't anyway when we're on TV, but especially since we're on Fox Sports Southwest and they're trying to push their new Fox on the Go or whatever they're calling their mobile platform. It's like the early days of ESPN360 or HBOgo. Last I checked they only had about 6-7 cable providers signed up.

ETA: Looks like they've got more... just not mine. http://www.foxsports.com/foxsportsgo/

Does anyone know what the beer selection at the Roost is like these days? And if it's all swill beer in stupid aluminum bottles, what are the odds that there will be a Homecoming special supply of St. A's like two years ago -- just hopefully with more appropriate staffing?

WTF?! I hate the 11 AM game starts. It just really kills my tailgating. I know others have said that they still do it but come on. What's better: getting up at 7 am to be out there by maybe 8 so that no one really shows up until 9:30 or 10 am so you can shut it all down by 10:30 so that you can make the game on time, or a 2 pm start where you can actually enjoy pre-game activities. I mean why don't they just have an 8 am start time or even better make it a Wed. or Thurs. night game.

Well, since you brought it up....

If you recall correctly, you will remember that I explicitly expressed my empathy with those for whom the start time posed a logistical problem -- and I distinguished those issues from the complaint based on temperature. What I "called out" was the complaint that a daytime game in late October would be "miserably" hot ("miserable" was your term, not time). I said that that complaint was lame. I still think it's lame, and to be honest I doubt there is anyone other than yourself who doesn't find it lame.

One can quibble about whether another time of day would be optimal, but to describe last Saturday's conditions (or any likely temperature forecast for late October) as "miserable" is just plain crazy.

Of course, saying a complaint is lame is not saying you're not entitled to have it. Neither I nor anyone else did that.

There was St Arnolds Christmas Ale available Saturday during the North Texas game. I'm pretty sure this was in response to the post game surveys.

We should have done the same. An 11:00am start for the Homecoming game is insanity.

I can assure you that dark colored quilted felt head-wear is not optimal in 85 degree sunshine.

But it looked good!

Last Saturday was beautiful day, but it was hot for late October. Not June at Reckling Park hot, but hot. It was amazing how much difference walking into the shade made in the stadium. At least homecoming will be after the time change, so my seats will at least get into the shade before game's end.

Of course, rather than a cloudless day in the mid 80s, it could be overcast and rainy too.
