RE: Were we ever as bad as SMU?
Just 3 short years ago SMU beat us 42-0 at the Liberty Bowl. Yes, I think we were as bad as they were today.

We lost 49-7 at Army, in the several inches of snow, with astro-turf cleats, and no jackets, at about 20 degrees. Yes Dempsey was narcissistic, delusional and paranoid, but that team was not bad. Go back and look at the draft picks. About five or so were drafted, Harris, Walker, Long, Elder, Burroughs, and a few others that I can think of that came very close. Hooper, Oliver, Lovelady, Jerry Harris, (Wasn't Eric "Cocaine" Fairs drafted as well?) very stacked team. Great athletes, crazy a$$ coach.

didn't we go thru a stretch under Dempsey where one week we were running the run and shoot against Army...and the wishbone the week after against someone else?

They have never truly recovered from the "death penalty". Really awful for their program.

RE: Were we ever as bad as SMU?
Talked to my brother, who's better than me at judging, and he said this SMU team is similar to Porter's last team. I've been a Tiger most of my life, and the Porter years were terrible. I felt for those SMU players, I've seen what they have ahead of them. I hope that we do not return to that terrible place again...the current UofM President seems to know that athletics is any school's "front porch", I hope he understands that football is the standard in terms of conference placement. Go Tigers Go!

Porter's teams were not near as bad as what Dempsey turned the program into.

Let's go way back. These peeps don't know bad. We lost to the Quantico Marines. We lost to Furman and the Citadel (not all in the same year). But we've been REALLY bad several times, for various amounts of time. And yes, we were worse than SMU.

RE: Were we ever as bad as SMU?
2 Years ago, Cal told Mississippi State's Basketball coach (after beating them by 40 points in Starkville), "Rick, all I can say is, it can't get any worse."

I think that's where SMU is.

The difference, of course, as was previously mentioned, is that it's a lot farther to the bottom from where SMU once was than it was for Memphis. Similarly, progress upward will likely be judged on SMU's past glory. Gonna be a tough row to hoe.

And yes, they call it the Death Penalty for a reason, and I'd lay money we'll never see it enforced again-at least not on a P5 conference member.

Yep. I think we had more disarray but SMU is a very bad football team.

Yep, me too. Been following the Tigers since the 1960's, never left a game early till the Porter years. We were horrible, couldn't bear to watch it.

Both the Dempsey/Porter era's were horribly bad. Those were some REALLY bad times to be a Tiger fan.

The problem with your analogy is that it indeed did get much, much worse for MSU.

Much like Fuente did in his first year, Rick Ray had to prune the roster of Stansbury's bad fruit and use walkons to fill roster spots...not practice squad roster, travel team roster.

I get your point, tho. You'd rather be terrible with hope than terrible with none.

I remember he decided he was going to change the offense in midseason to the run and shoot. From what I remember, we tried to use it against somebody and had something like 33 yards passing for the game. I don't remember running the wishbone, but he was crazy enough to think he could do anything because he was such a great coach.

Sports Illustrated once listed us as one of the Top Ten Worst programs in the country, in the 80s if I recall.

During the Larry Porter era, we would debate about going to a game. By the end of the first quarter, we realized it was going to be another ugly loss, and watched real games on tv.

In Dempsey's second game, we drove down to SW Louisiana...nice facilities and stadium, built into a bluff on one side. We had two calls for too many players on the field. Little did we know that was the tip of the iceberg of bad things to come.

I remember meeting Dempsey at a luncheon or something and my first impression of him was "you ain't from around here, are you?"

Well in to Porter's second season we had to call a time out because we didn't know how to kick an extra point. His Tigers may beat out the Tams / Sounds as the worst teams to ever play in Memphis.

Wasn't the first 10 or 15 seconds against Mississippi State in 2011 false starts and holding penalties? I can't exactly recall. I knew from there on out that it was going to be a bad year.

And then Chucky Cavagnaro threw Charlie Bailey under the bus...

We were worse than that Rex's first year after the walkout from the Williamson years

Mike Dion was our only hope...all 152 lbs.
