No, there isn't any justification. They aren't in any P5 tie in like Notre Dame and they aren't even eligible for an Access Bowl slot since they have no conference affiliation…
The justification lies in their exposure on ESPN and the $$$ they generate from it. BYU has more of both commodities than any member of the American.

Ok, so they get slightly more money than we do yet are completely irrelevant in every regard once they lose one game. No conference championships, no Access Bowl contention, nothing.

Am I supposed to be impressed that they got ESPN to shell out some extra chump change for their TV deal?

BYU has absolutely nothing remotely close to ND's "place" in CFB, and for that reason, it's idiotic for them to insist on being independent.

Schools like USF and UCF have a mission of winning... BYU is a bit different, so its not exactly idiotic. Their mission is faith driven and speading awareness of their school.
BYU gets EVERY home game on ESPN in good time slots and never on Fridays. They even got a game in Ireland as you know. They also got ESPN to help them get a deal with Notre Dame for 4 games. They want exposure over anything else.

I tend to agree that it would help their program to join a conference but to do so would mean they would have to join something (AAC or MWC) that they deem is beneath them. Truth is, their ratings have been pretty solid and in 5 years, just as much as we will want an increase, I wouldn't doubt they get one too.

You said "BYU never plays games on Fridays??? What!? They play almost half their games on Fridays. Your a numbers guy, why would you lie about that? Are you a BYU fan trying to pump them up? Also, You said espn got them a deal with Norte dame for 4 games" wtf? They played 2 road games on NBC. 0 home games, none on espn..Norte dame canceled return games and espn had nothing to do with the Norte dame games. You are a BYU fan aren't you? I thought it was odd how you joined the board last month and already have hundreds of posts....wasn't sure who you were trolling for but I think I know now.

Billy, do you just have some kind of gay love for me? I think you search for my posts... just to let you know that I do support your sexual choices but i am indeed straight.

and FBS Schedules still has 4 games listed for BYU and ND.

and yes, I accidentally wrote Friday when I was thinking Thursday. My point was they get prime spots...which they do.

and since you know so much about which game is played on what channel Ill just give you a link so you can study up.

Ok, I retract that point. I missed it when I looked at their schedule.

Thanks for the info.

Overall, Billy loves to try to attack my posts over trivial crap and doesnt actually go up against the point of the post which is that BYU has a completely different desire and mission, so to say that they need to join a conference isnt exactly correct. You have to look at the motivations of each team. Success for BYU as an organization is getting out the word and exposure for the Mormon faith. Right now they have a better platform to do that then they would in the AAC.

That was and is the point of the post but Billy will be back to go after some other point which has little to do with the actually reason of the thread.

BYU has absolutely nothing remotely close to ND's "place" in CFB, and for that reason, it's idiotic for them to insist on being independent.

BYU also has permission to rebroadcast all their games on BYU TV and other special considerations from ESPN for both Football and WCC basketball. Hell ESPN uses BYU TV HD equipment when they broadcast BYU games. That is another reason their TV deal is pretty good as it is cheap for ESPN to broadcast there. They only send in the announcers and a few technicians. A football only AAC membership would mean quite a drop in $$ without a Boise type contract. If you want BYU you will have to give them a special TV deal that puts them above the rest in the AAC. Given your past statements against those type of deals I really don't see BYU football joining the AAC. (or the MWC)

Just like any team, they COULD possibly make a playoff spot if they have a monster 12-0 year, but being independent doesn't help that anymore than being in a conference does.

The reality is that BYU, as of today, has nothing to play for once they record that first loss and are out of the long-shot playoff birth. At least we're playing for conference championsihps and maybe looking at Access Bowl slots. BYU has only a Miami Bowl slot to look forward to that is guarenteed if they can limp into 6 wins.

So it's better playing in a conference that "no one" pays attention to short of there being a playoff contender with wins over good P5 teams as opposed to being independent, having their own TV contract, sometimes games on its own channel and is clearly distinct from the other programs at its level?

Nothing to play for? Even if they have an agreement in place, they still have to qualify for that bowl so that's something to play for, as is games with Utah (when they return to the schedule) and just the love of playing football in general for the players. Teams in the Sun Belt have something to play for, should BYU join them.

Sorry if I was a little over the top and snarky but my point is that BYU should feel just fine without having a conference title to play for.

Houston was still pretty good too but the competition was so high they got snubbed from tourney a few times...great days

Houston was in the worst stretch in its history during the original version of C-USA, the days of 11 win or fewer seasons and an empty Hofienz Pavilion (well, some things don't change).

actually I agree that they won't join a conference any time soon and by the way "Mormon" isn't the desired term for members of the LDS church. I'm sure you can find me some examples on the internet but I have several LDS friends and family. Mormon is so old hat bro

I tend to not spend a ton of time trying to be politically correct about religion on a sports board. Mormon is their "branch" of the christian faith. There are many different types, but it is the appropriate umbrella term.

I figure if it was good enough for their founder Joseph Smith, who actively used the term Mormon, then it should be good enough as an umbrella term... Its basically like calling Catholics, Christians. Christian is the basic religion and Catholic is the particular sect.

Actually that's a poor analogy. Catholics are Christians. The LDS church has evolved many times over the years....Joseph Smith died 150 years ago. for the last several years they've been shedding the Mormon term and prefer to say LDS. I'm just trying to call them what they prefer to be called. Not being politically correct, a simple courtesy. Nitpicking by me maybe....I won't argue on this thing anymore. We ll get back to arguing over sports! Take care bro.

Oh I agree. I met many Utah fans at the 05 fiesta bowl and most were LDS....I partied with a few of them on mill avenue in Tempe afterwards...
