I have to agree. Bad teams are bad teams. I don't care what conference you are in. Take away the logo on the helmet and the conference patch off of the jersey and you see two bad to terrible teams in UNC and VT. I don't care if they are P5. And don't get me started on ECU getting credit for just playing SCjr. A team that is bad too. Just because they played them they get a bump.
What that is saying is even the bad P5 teams are still above any G5 team in terms of power and quality.
I don't know why we just can't view the product on the field and call it like we see it. VT is terrible in every facet of the game. UNC has given up 29 (to LIBERTY!!), 27, 70, 50, 34, 50, and 43 points in their games. Yet they claim they are good wins?
Hilarious thing is just the other night they were discussing Ohio State's chances of making the playoff. Well they said when weighing the one loss teams you now need to look at who their loss was to in order to separate the teams. Then they said that Ohio State's loss to VT keeps them out of the discussion. OUT OF THE DISCUSSION. Yet for ECU it is a quality win. How does that work?
The other thing I loved was they were talking about Mississippi State. They were running down their resume and then said they really got to flex their muscle against a UAB team. Wait...what? But you have been dogging our S.O.S. and our conference all season. How can UAB be a team that Mississippi State flexes their muscle on? By your summation it should have been a breeze.
FBS college football is the only level of sport anywhere that decides its champion based on opinions. You have a 13 person (12 currently) committee that is going to VOTE on who they THINK or BELIEVE is the best team.
Stop the crap. Have a 16 team playoff with every conference champ seeded along with 6 at-large teams and decide this like every other level of college football. So what if you don't think a Marshall or another team from the "G5" belongs on the field. Play the game. We see this same garbage spewed every March. Duke fans said the same thing about Mercer. Right before the tip the Kansas players told the VCU players that their time was up that they didn't belong at that level. That their run was nice but it was rightfully going to be over. Butler played in back-to-back championship games and were questioned most of the way. Look at Florida Gulf Coast two seasons ago or George Mason a few years back.
The networks and the NCAA are just trying to protect their cartel. They don't want to see it upset. I read an article today that said Marshall doesn't have the "prestige" to deserve the playoff spot. Said this season didn't matter that because we aren't a dyed in the wool blueblood program we don't even deserve consideration. What is that?
The Access Bowl is nothing more than a pat on the head. I think it was posted on here or somewhere else where someone said we thought we were getting better deal with this new system but actually got screwed. Now we (the G5) get one slot we all have to fight over when in year's past you could see 2-3 of us in the big bowls as we saw Utah, Boise, and TCU in them several times and in some seasons at the same times.
I wish that we would all just wise up and look at the P5 and say we are in or we are out. No more games. Not more crap. Last season when the realignment hadn't settled there was talk amongst the G5 conference to have a playoff ready to go had we been frozen out. I say move forward with that. What are we leaving behind? Before ECU fans jump on us for saying this. Get real Pirate fans. Had you not lost to SCjr and both VT and UNC were good teams and you ran the table you have zero chance of getting in one of those top 4 spots.
Don't believe me? Look at the projected top4. Several predictions show 2 or 3 SEC teams in the playoff. So if the Big10, Pac-12, and Big XII aren't deemed worthy then why would you be? ESPN is convinced that the final four teams will be Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Auburn, and FSU. Yea that's a playoff alright. You know I am rooting hard for there to be 3 SEC team in because every piece of proverbial
is going to hit the fan.
This whole thing is a sham. I love the arguments by those that oppose a 16 team playoff.
"It would be too many games"
Under the current 4 team playoff there will be the possibility of 15 games for two teams. A 16 team playoff makes 16-17 games depending on your conference due to conference championship games.
"It is bad for the welfare of the student athlete"
Correction you mean the FBS athlete. FCS, D-II, and D-III does it and have always done it. Marshall played 15 games in 87,91,92,95, and 96. We didn't have a bunch of injured players that.
"It would take too long and keep players out of class"
No longer than the month long bowl season and definitely not as long as March Madness. So you care about football players being out of class not basketball players???
Dump the bowl system and make a true playoff. Yea I know I know what about all those schools that enjoy bowls. Win your conference or earn an at-large. Do you really deserve post season play if you back into a .500 record? And yes I know it affects Marshall too. We wouldn't have went to a bowl in 2009 or 2011. Well Marshall fans enjoyed the playoffs in the FCS days. There are no bowls in basketball. And we keep adding bowl. Every season there is always worry that a team with a losing record will be in a bowl.
There is not one thing diplomatic or equal about this system, the BCS system, or the system that preceded it.
And no I don't just feel like this because Marshall is has the potential to finish undefeated. I have always felt like this. I thought Boise was getting the shaft during their run.
I just do not think it is right that from day one of every season 64 teams out of 128 are told they are not allowed to play for a national title and an extremely less share of the money. But hey little guy you can play in the weedeater bowl.
Please ECU fans do not take this as a shot to you personally. I hate the system.
